Green bottle propane vs 5lb tabk

So I have a buddy heater and a blackstone griddle I run camping. I’ve noticed that they run way better off the green bottles than my 5 lb or 10 lb propane tank. Anyone else experience that? My griddle runs but never gets that hot and the buddy heater kept flaming out. Might buy one of those in line filters but wasn’t sure if it might be related to more pressure in the 5lb tanks? I didn’t think the small blackstone or buddy had built in regulators, but maybe. Curious if anyone else experiences this. My normal stove runs fine.

I've run my buddy heater with my 5lb, no problems. The buddy heater flaming out or sputtering I've found that is due to the heater not being level.

 

Try a different 5lb tank. I've never had an issue with mine.

 

That’s weird, it’s a new 5 lb tank, but I refill it at my local propane place. I have another 10 lb tank I’ll try. Wonder if i need a filter for it or something

 

Stupid question, but I'll ask...is your tank full? Should weigh ~13 lbs full, 8 lbs empty.

 

It might be the safety regulator on the 5lb tank. Try this: close the regulator, remove and reattach the heater (make sure the valve on it is closed), then crack open the valve on the tank so slowly it seems ridiculous. Do this at every use. That should fix the problem.

I’ve got the same tank and experienced low gas flow until someone clued me in on this process. Hope it helps.

 

I had this issue with the hose I was using that adapted the 5lb to the 1lb fitting. The Weber ones I was using would eventually fail and not seat fully which would cause reduced flow until the plastic spacer would finally crack and fall out which would end up causing no flow.

The ones I use now are from Amazon and have not given me any issues so far for over a year of hard use.

Thanks. So I hooked up my 10 lb tank and the buddy heater worked fine. The 5 lb tank has a built in gauge. Wonder if that’s some how messing with it. I have a spare hose though. I’ll try that as well. Thanks

 

Did you get the 5 pound one from Costco? My 5 pound one came from Costco with the built in gauge i never had an issue in fact I have 2 of them but things do get faulty

I've had two different propane "gauges" on my 5lb tanks that gave me issues always at the worst times. Thankfully you can just unthread them and carry on.

Gauge is just one more leak point...

 

Yup, it’s the 5 lb one from Costco. I have another hose I’ll try. Just was annoying when it was cold out and needed the heater and it wasn’t working. I think the gauge is built in so not many options. I guess just use it for something else. Or maybe get it refilled somewhere else

 

You can always return or exchange it I know it’s a pain but at least you know my 5 pound Costco one works fine with my heater buddy maybe it’s your coupler hose?

 

I suppose. I bought the tank like 2 years ago so not sure they would still take it. I’ll try another hose and see if that’s it. Just kinda sucks since that tank is the most portable.

 

I had this same issue with my blackstone 22 when switching from 1 pound bottles to a tank that requires the 1 pound propane tank adapter line. I had one weber line and one off brand line and they wouldn't flow as much as the 1 pound bottle. Kind of odd I thought, but then I decided to pick up an actual blackstone branded adapter line that happened to be in stock locally. Low and behold that seemed to do the trick.

 

So turned out it was the hose. Pressed the schrader valve thing in and gas barely came out. Popped another hose I have in there, and the gas came out really solid. Hope that solves it. Still like the green bottle for some stuff but this will be way better for longer trips. Thanks

 

You were right. Changed to another hose I had and it works fine.
