I have been having a groaning/ clunking sound when I drive and turn at low speeds. I took it to a shop, they said that the UCA needed greasing. This solved the problem for about a week, but now its back worse than I was before. The shop used a product called InForce I believe, but judging by the return of the noise it wasn't the right product or the UCA's are just failing. The ball joint also seems to be collecting dirt which I don't think is the right thing.

A previous owner put the lift on the truck, so am not sure what brand of the upper control arms they are. They do look similar to Total Chaos upper control arms in this thread below. Do these just need to be greased again with a grease suited to them or is there a different issue?

    Thanks

Whatever grease you are using is attracting dirt. It needs to be a dry grease.

TC suggest aerosol dry PTFE lube, BLASTER has a version of that at most hardware stores.

This is one of the few applications of WD40, it will clean out all that old grease and allow you to spray on the BLASTER product i linked above. (WD40 is NOT a lubricant, it's very very good at cleaning out oils and greases, and not much else)

Those are uniballs not ball joints. As mentioned above give them a good cleaning and dry lube. If that doesn’t do it they might need to be replaced. Uniballs are higher maintenance than ball joints.

Might want to double check the lower control arm too.

Agree w/ dry lube on the uniball. But depending on how many miles are on those UCAs, you might want to consider replacing the uniball. Mine was shot and last year pressed in new uniballs and replaced the bushings. Those should have grease zerks btw. Allegedly loosening the long bolt allows grease to escape as you press in more, but I've never been able to grease mine on the truck. I gave in and just remove the whole damn thing and regrease them.

I greased up the uniball with some dry lube. Seems to be working for now. This winter I plan on greasing the bushings.

I work the UCA's into my regular maintenance to keep things straight. Whenever the tires get rotated I grease the drive shaft and loosen the top bolts to do the UCA's (two zerks on each). I'll hit the uniballs with PTFE dry lube when it makes sense, like hot dry days in the spring summer and fall.
