Exactly my thought. Plenty of open spots in this apartments parking zone and they just wanna make a quick hundred bucks.

“A quick hundred bucks”? Most of these slimeballs charge $500 or more to get your truck back. It’s borderline criminal, but there’s no official regulation so they charge whatever they feel like.

Dang I’m lucky then on the price. I know most apartments on campus here charge $100 for this. If that sounds bad then $500 is borderline theft.

OK first off as a former tow truck driver if your truck was in four-wheel-drive and the parking brake set they would’ve put dollies under it to tow the way they’re not going to risk damaging your car for a couple hundred bucks… Secondly in my neck of the woods it’s a minimum $350 charge to get your car out of impound and that’s not including storage days if you take more than one day to come get it

This story still doesn't add up, the OP isn't telling the whole story. I'm thinking he knew he was parked illegally and put it in 4X4 thinking it would be impossible to tow that way.

There is no reason to be in 4X4 under these conditions. Even on ice, it would only prevent the vehicle from sliding if some of the wheels were on dry pavement. If all 4 are on ice it's still going to slide even in 4X4. If some are on ice and others on dry pavement it is only going to slide a couple of feet until all 4 wheels get onto dry pavement.

Maybe, maybe not. A lot of the damage is cumulative. Stuff doesn't always break right away, but that doesn't mean parts weren't damaged and will fail prematurely later on.

But parking illegally doesn't mean it's OK for a tow truck driver to damage your vehicle. I'd like to know HOW they towed it and if it wasn't done properly I'd find a way to hold them accountable if any damage was done.

I think your truck will be fine. +1 for all those who said they used dolly's. Towing a vehicle at any speed with locked wheels and tires on the pavement is unfathomable and unspeakably dangerous. Rest easy, even slimeball tow companies dont want to be seen driving down the road with a cloud of white smoke pouring off the visibly locked tires of a fishtailing vehicle in tow...

OP, can we get the real story?

By “friend’s apartment”, is that code for my drug dealers’ crib? By “rainy,” is that code for you were as high as a kite?

also some details would be good, such as where were you parked that caused it to be towed? Ditch? On the grass? Handicapped spot?

so many gaps to fill with this story.....

Whatever happened to just turning your wheels into the curb, if you're facing down hill, or turning them out if the ass end is downhill? That's how we are taught, in case a brake fails or it slides, it's not getting too far, because the curb is there to stop it. driver's ed 101.

Hahah sorry for the lack of info. I kinda panicked last night when it happened. I’ve always heard that if it’s raining pretty hard then to do 4wd and the parking brake in order to double the parking brakes strength. Frankly I probably would’ve been okay without 4wd engaged last night, but I’m kinda a “better safe than sorry kinda guy.” Good news is I just drove it and it rides fine so I’m sure they put dollies on.

Hahah no man. I was visiting a friend I went to high school with. I didn’t know the apartment complex he lived in was as ruthless as it is about towing. Just because I quickly posted something with less than ideal info doesn’t mean I’m a junkie. If you’d looked at the previous posts you would’ve seen that I parked on a hill that’s in the contracted tow away zone. And yes it was rainy, and no that isn’t slang for being high.

Sounds like grand theft auto to me. Call the police and report it stolen and notify your insurance company. Let both know who the thief is. As long as you have all the proper permits and it is ''your'' lot, it's auto theft.

And yes, the cops will very likely weasel out of doing anything at all by claiming their standby BS phrase of '' it's a civil matter.'' It really isn't though if you were legally parked, your car was stolen.
