I was browsing the thread on 6 cylinder oil filter wrenches so i thought i'd start one for us with 4 cylinders. Trying to find a good one but not sure what to get.

For traditional metal canister type filter, these work great. The harder you have to turn, the harder it grips. It will literally crush the filter can if the filter won't budge. You can find this style just about anywhere.

I use this one from Lisle. Same principle as above, it grips harder the more you apply torque to spin it off.

This. Lisle rocks, easy to use in tight spaces.

I have one of the types mentioned above, an they work really good. Bought it in 1991 when I bought my first Toyota truck and it’s been with me ever since

i actually have the lisle 63600 one. i must be an idiot or something because i couldn't get it to grab the filter. kept slipping off and i couldn't get any torque on it. had to resort to using an old school strap wrench which is a pain in the ass in that tight space. i will have to try it again.

I favor oil filter pliers, you can crush down the filter as hard as needed. As mentioned those spring loaded jaw things tend to slip, then back to the pliers I go.

I slipped pieces of rubber hose over the jaws of mine like this one, to enhance the grip on that slick filter paint.
I also own & use the other styles mentioned in this thread.

In the past, on a motor other than my 2.7, I have resorted to stabbing a screwdriver through the walls of the filter to get it to come off.

Have not had the opportunity to change mine yet, still on the service plan. This was a great read, good advice all around!
