So my damper that lets the glove box down softly wont stay attached to the portion that connects to the dash because the plastic is too weak now after taking on and off for servicing the cabin air filter. I did not notice this until after an oil change at the stealership. So I pointed the blame at them for it not being connected after I left (guess dude just gave up and threw it in the glove box) I complained. Turns out the service manager nor advisors know this is an issue on second gens. And claimed there is a “recall kit” or TSB on it. Im posting here not for help with the glove box because after research I have found that a mechanical pencil eraser does wonders at keeping the tabs spread. However, I would like to know if such a kit exists… because they say they will fix it on my 06 taco free of charge as soon as they get this kit. I figured the only fix would be to replace the dash. Does anyone have any experience with a tsb or recall kit on this? Posting a pic of my fix. Thanks in advance . I will demand to see this kit before I let some tech in there screwing up my handy work.

FWIW, there will not be a "recall" on this problem. Recalls are typically a safety issue. TSB.....maybe, although I doubt one would exist, its not a major issue.

The damper is a major PITA to install. Although, it easily disconnects.

    FWIW, I'd suggest DIY repair.

When I replace my cabin filter, most of the time/frustration is reinstalling the damper. The process typically requires a series of "blue" words to be uttered.

I disconnected the glove box damper on my 2006. Very easy to live without it. I know this does not address your concern, but this is my solution.

Thanks for posting this.. good to know that little split nub does get weak over time.

The only practical solution I can think of is to not use the damper any more. It's a nice feature to have but the glove box will still function without it.

But if you really want a solution? Maybe cut off the nub, drill a hole, and then find a bolt+nut that can go in that spot instead. Just hope the dash plastic around the drilled hole doesn't crack over time then.

Thanks! So far the eraser works great. And Ill just disconnect it from the glove box side and not the dash. I figure maybe I can get another 15 years out of doing it that way lol. Then we may go “damper-less” but I feel like there isnt a official toyota fix and its just the dealerships way of blowing smoke and going in there and doing the same thing I have already done, or worse.

My damper fell off several years ago and I tossed it in my box of other unused crap. It's a piss poor design and even poorer execution. I don't use the glove box enough to make a new stud and mount it.

Thank you for posting this. I too threw the damper in the glovebox, but after seeing your post, the mechanical pencil eraser is in place and working great.

I wanted to update everyone that may be interested. I received word from the service manager that this was in fact a TSB that started in 2008 and ran till 2019. He said Toyota corporate did a “good will” and is sending this part to the dealership to install on my truck. It will be here Tuesday and he is to text me a picture of this “kit” so I can see it for myself. Ill also request to see this part in person if i accept and want this installed in my truck, it sounds like more of a glove box support than to fix my issue I was having that I fixed with the eraser. Either way, if its legit and free I will let you guys know if you want. Ill also post the pic of this kit I receive. I was not aware TSBs expired? He also said I have the option to decline for now and they will hold onto the part with my VIN on it for the next 5 years and if i feel I don’t currently need it. Whole thing is weird. Thank you for the feedback so far guys!

Well turns out the service manager was blowing smoke. There is no official toyota fix to this. This is the picture I was sent and told they replace the pins. There are no push pins holding these things to the dash, I kept my fix instead of letting one of them mess it up. But since I caught him in a lie I got a free alignment and detail out of it lol…. The part number he sent me was 90467-07201.

Thanks for the update, but I'll just say if they can't even master the f'ing glove box on your truck then I'm not so sure I'd want them performing an alignment on it. They probably used brake parts cleaner when they detailed it.

The pencil eraser is a good idea. I used a small wood screw to do the same thing. Has worked like a charm since 2009.

Anything to keep the prongs spread after putting the damper on the prongs. I have a small piece of folded cardboard in there.

I bought one of those inexpensive automotive plastic fasteners sets off of Amazon. When I started looking for fasteners that needed replaced on my Tacoma I was surprised to find way more missing than I had originally thought. Those plastic fasteners have come in handy for other things as well. I replaced all the plastic pins that fell out of my dishwasher's rack wheels with them too. My glove compartment buffer, however, just has a drywall screw spreading the split fastener apart. It's worked fine for ten years now on my '06 Tacoma.

I gave up on my damper many many years ago. Got used to the sound of the glovebox thudding open every time. Reminds me of old school trucks

I just took a small screw and installed it in between the plastic prongs, haven't had a issue in years and it’s been in and out several times now at this point.
