Hi, I was wondering if I should stay with my stock exhaust or put this glass pack muffler that came off my sisters Tacoma(hers is a 3.5) it took a big toll on her mpg but she did have two minor ish exhaust leaks. I was wondering if I should put it on my truck cuz I’ve always wanted to see what my truck would sound like with an “exhaust” but then comes the factor of im in highschool and I gotta pay for gas and anyways this thing loves gas at the moment it’s the end of winter so I’m get like 250 miles a full tank (I drive kinda fast lol) but I also heard glass packs are BAD for the motor itself since it had back pressure and it goes back into the motor and I lose power. Could someone help me with some real information because I’d love to know if it’s even worth it. Thanks!

It should increase mpg if anything (although barely noticeable) because it lets the exhaust flow more freely. Glasspack is also just a muffler so the backpressure change should be helpful if anything (it's when you get into cutting cats the backpressure change becomes more pronounced in a negative way). I'd say it'd be a good decision overall.

I've never liked the sound of a glasspack on a Japanese v6, or really any vehicle. Just sounds like you're gargling.

My old 22RT-e 4Runner had some generic RV muffler on it with 2.5" pipe from the turbo back, and that actually sounded pretty nice - deep and throaty, but not like a fart can. When it was my brother's he had a glasspack on it (briefly) and it sounded like garbage.

Generally speaking, an exhaust does next to nothing except change the sound. So if that's what you're going for, go ahead. But if you want power increases, it's pointless because you didn't change the air going IN the engine.

If you want power, get a super charger. Then maybe an exhaust might actually do something, but that's more to take advantage of the forced induction.

Just what is your definition of Glass Pack ??

Most times they are cheap and sound really bad(loud) With Less Back Pressure then your Stock exhaust

Depending where you live it is a great way to piss off neighbors and Meet Local Law enforcement .

Though if your running the California Emissions with 2 Cats it is not all that bad.

For the best Gas Mileage keep your foot out of it.

Correct tire pressure Keep extra weight out of the truck unless you can not live without it

I’d say keep the exhaust stock. Save your money and/or time for parts/repairs/maintenance that are needed and will keep the truck running longer.

If u want the deep throaty sound then put on straight/stainless exhaust headers.....
and a cold air induction.....that will do the trick.......
glass packs on jap engines dont sound that great......

my cousin use to imitate/mock that sound......I had a mercury capri w/glass.....
    He drove a '75 trans am 454....stick...
Use to 'Launch' it on the on ramps to get on the highway......
emerge from the black cloud......everybody terrified trying to get out of way.

Called glasspacks because they have fiberglass in them (at least the real ones do). I had a Cherry Bomb on my car back in the day lol. Thrush was also popular.

True glasspacks with fiberglass also get louder as they get older and the fiberglass burns out.

I put an Aero Exhaust Aero Turbine on my Tacoma. Got the AT2525XL. Good deep tone, doesn't resonate, and is mechanically dampened(all steel baffle...no fiberglass). Forgot to add that it doesn't sound like a fart can or ricey.

I was asking the OP what there definition of a Glass pack was. Because his comment that it increased back pressure and reduced fuel mileage

Yes i understand that i belonged to the loud exhaust gives you 50 more horse power in the early seventies

After being on a first name basis with all the police within 50 miles miles I called them all Sir.

I learned quiet is better .

If you do, just get a nice one. I have the Flowmaster DBX and it's perfect (maybe a little too loud as I get older). They do a dual perforated cone with fiberglass on the outside so you get the best of all worlds. Tried straight pipe before that, and yikes.
But no, it wont affect mpg or power to a tangible level.
