I'm a low tech guy in a high tech world, I know that. But is there any way to get the map function in my new 2021 Tacoma SR-5 to work with out a smart phone hooked up to the truck? If I push the map function button it just tells me to go to the Toyota web site and install the navigation app. Have tried several times but no workie for me...A friend has a 2018 Tundra and he has a SD card that loads for navigation, I have no such thing..Any help??

Maybe your truck didn't come with the navigation package. Probably have to visit the dealership if you want that option.

    I use the Rand-McNally system.

Reliable. Doesn't need a phone or electrical supply. Updates available every few years. Not expensive.

It does have a few limitations, but nothing that is difficult to work around.

Got no idea how I did it but if I use Google Maps on my Iphone and click [Start] the directions
come through the speakers. No map but I do get the directions. Damn thing is smart enough to
pause my Spotify Tune, give me some info, then start the tune back up.

Found a clue on this site somewhere on how to do it -

I'm good with the Rand-McNally method. Sometimes I even consult Google Maps before I hit the road.
But then there are some who need GPS to get to & from the place they work every day. Even worse, those who need GPS to find their way out of a clear plastic bag.
I don't deny the convenience of GPS, but it does nothing to help in the development of a good sense of direction.

I generally use the Nav in my Taco for two distinct uses:
    1) To gauge what traffic conditions are like and to tell me when I'll arrive at a destination.
    2) Off-road I like the 'Bread Crumb' feature which shows you which roads or trails you've been on.

All that having been said, I'm still a hardcore paper map guy when I'm off-roading. My main map of the San Bernardino Mountains is covered in hand-written notes I've made over the past ten years or so (I can't remember exactly when I bought that particular map).

I use for primarily for my ETA as well.
I also enjoy confounding it when I know where I'm going and DON'T take route it suggests.

Shoot I don't live in a clear bag - ain't got time to consult a paper map whilst driving 70 MPH either - anytime I go someplace
I'm not familiar with I find it a big help...

But one has to wonder, how did we survive without cell phones and all this technology -

Anyone ever drive coast-to-coast with just a paper map? ..
Anyone old enough here to remember pay phones? LOL ...
How about just dialing 4 digits on a phone to reach the other party.
Let's go way back... Party Lines ... no not that kind of party line.
    Black-and-White TV ?..
    NO TV ??

For the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to work on my 2021 the phone needs to be plugged in to the USB outlet on the console, Bluetooth pairing not required. I use Waze to find the fuzz.

I have wireless Apple CarPlay in my work truck (2021 Chevy 1500) which is awesome, the phone never comes out of my pocket.

I have a twofold appreciation for this. I worked as a crosscountry land surveyor and as a cartographer pre GPS, pre CAD

I also still carry my Dad's gov issue brass compass from WWII in the truck.

Some of above posters are wrong; or don't know how the base 21s are set up.

OP: The map function only works in Android Auto or Carplay. Those only work if plugged into the USB (unless you buy a wireless dongle and buy an app, but let's not go into that for this basic discussion).

The map button on the base trucks is just a shortcut to access the mapping software on your phone using AA or CP, it's not a standalone map. AFAIK there's nothing you can actually download to the head unit that will make it work, despite what the pop up message says. The button is actually redundant because there's a touch screen button on AA that also gives you instant access to the map. Ironically on my screen that touch button and the physical "map" button are right next to each other.

So - if you don't want to use a cell phone and plug it in, you can't use the head unit for mapping.

And I'm a paper map guy, too. But I got a cell phone and the technology is in my base truck so I do use it on longer trips. It's helpful. Plus, Pandora on the head unit...

Navigation came on my truck. My home screen shows my music on one side and the other half is my map. I touch either and they expand to my music or maps. I just punch my destination and voila there it is and I just follow and go back to my music vice versa. I am not into any free trials or smart phones and this maps work. I also start my truck with the key FOB.
I do notice that if I touch my info button that it will not show any traffic or construction area. Maybe that is the difference between having it on you smart phone

Update every few years? Apple Maps and Google Maps are updated as soon as they know of something new, so I don’t have to buy a new map every few years. It’s also “free” with your smart phone (free is funny with Google as they take your data, but that’s a whole other discussion). My stand alone GPS gets free updates also. I also don’t have to pull over to look something up if there is a detour or traffic.
It’s nice I can keep my eyes on the road (using the sound on the GPS) and not have to look at the map to make sure I know where my exit or turn is.
As for an electrical supply, if my car battery and alternator isn’t working to power my phone, I have more issues to worry about.

I do not miss paper maps at all.

A lot of tutorials on YouTube on how to use it. just look up how to use Apple Car Play.

    https://youtu.be/cBW5K3DcWYo

I’ll use it going to and from work for traffic. It has saved me a lot of time telling me of car accidents/traffic on my route. I take a whole different way to and from work also from what the map/gps will tell me. It wants me to take a road that I know has construction, but I go down a road that has trees all over and very calming to drive down.

I use to work for the cable company many years ago way before GPS. I got really good with direction and learning 100 block in all the towns, but still had a 6 county map that I would update myself. I remember party lines and pay phones also… starting to age myself a little.

Yes, the TRD models come like that. Not so sure about the SR5, although our SR5 4Runner has built in navigation.
