I had my mind pretty set on getting Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S but my local shop said their warehouse doesn't seem to have any. Unfortunately, I'm up against the wall a little bit as I currently have my snow tires on my truck and had an unrepairable hole in my all seasons I had on previously so I don't want to wait much longer to try and track down/ship discoverers.

Does anyone have any experience with these tires? Thoughts, feelings, concerns? I do mostly road driving but looking for something that can handle some logging roads (dirt/gravel) and has a more chunky look without going something really designed for off roading. I'll be getting them in the stock size (265/65R17) on stock suspension

Hey, I missed this thread when you first posted it. I have been running the Grabbers for about 25K miles now. I would happily get them again when this set wears out.

It sounds like we do the same type of driving. I’m like 80% highway, 20% dirt and gravel trails with some beach driving. I really like these tires. They are smooth on the highway, the wet and dry traction is phenomenal and they look incredible if you care about that.

I do a lot of long trips with trail rides mixed in and these have never failed me.

Off road, I have never had any issues at all. They’re good in dirt, gravel and loose beach sand. I will say that they fling rocks bad. Also, they have become a bit loud in the last 5K miles but nothing crazy. I still would be happy to buy another set when these wear out.

The tread life is unreal. Like I said, I’ve had these for about 25K miles and people still compliment the tires and think they’re new. I would highly recommend the Grabber. Here’s a pic from a trail ride earlier today:

General Grabber.jpg Ive had a set of General Grabber AT/x 265/70-16's, Discount tire sold them and installed. Decided I wasn't going to lift the truck so stayed with OEM size. Thought about the LT265/75-16's but man the weight per tire really starts climbing up. They ride great so far, I know not many miles but alot cheaper than similar tires in the same category. Road noise,so far is minimal, definetley louder than stock OEM goodyears, but at least they are more truck tire now.

I like General Tire. I had little 13 inch Grabbers on my ‘75 Pontiac Astre

I had a set of 285/75/16 on my Xterra before I went to 35's. I loved them. They were a bit soft on the sidewall but that's about it. Definitely recommend them.

Sure thing, been a customer of Discount since the mid 90's.
Even worked on the corporate aircraft at one time. Discount has always been my go too since y'all have stores through out the U. S. A. As long as the company format stays the same and no crazy marketing like some current companies I'll always shop Discount Tire. Thanks

I just posted this review in my build thread but I think it might would useful to cross-post here…

I figure since I just had an alignment and road force balance done, now would be a good time to write a little 30K mile review of my General Grabber A/Tx tires.

The short and sweet of it: I love these tires. General bills them as a Hybrid tire, so it’s in between an all terrain and a mud tire (hence the “x” in the name). I have recently been doing tire research again because I’ve been debating going up to a 33” tire. I have pretty much exclusively looking at hybrid tires and I have noticed that, at least in my research, the Grabber is the only hybrid tire with the 3PMS rating

Apparently all of the Kenda Klever R/T’s qualified for the 3PMS rating, with the exception of one single size, so Kenda decided to keep the rating off the entire line of tires. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

Anyway, back to the Grabbers. These tires have been amazing in all conditions and at this point, I will probably be buying a second set when these wear out. If they ever wear out. Below are my thoughts in some various conditions:

    Dry Pavement:

Absolutely phenomenal. 10/10. I still forget driving out of the tire shop 30K miles ago after I had them mounted. I was amazing at the difference in on-road handling from the stock Toyo highway tires. They grip so well, the truck feels much more stable and planted.

    Wet pavement:

Again, 10/10. These tires have extremely deep and frequent sipes, so the wet and winter handling is exceptional. I have never had them break loose in rainy driving and I have done extended highway drives in horrendous downpours. I always felt very safe and planted on the road even at 60+ MPH in the rain.

    Mud:

I don’t do a ton of stuff in the mud, but the driving I have done in mud these have been great.

    Sand:

When aired down properly, 10/10 again. I drove through some really deep and loose sand last year in the outer banks and these got me through without getting stuck.

    Ice and Snow:

I can’t really speak to these conditions as I have only had these tires through one winter and it was a very mild winter.

    Dirt/Gravel/Rocks:

(Not rock crawling rocks, but trails with frequent small to medium size rocks).

Again, exceptional. This is the majority of my offroad driving and these things hook up like champions. I have never been stuck although I do stay within my comfort zone on the trails and I don’t do any rock crawling obviously.

    Road noise:

At this point, 7/10. They were super quiet but recently they have gotten a bit louder. Still not as loud as the Yokohama g003 mud terrains I used to have. Although they are a bit noisy nowadays, they are silky smooth on the road. There has been a tiny bit of uneven wear (see post above) but that is probably due to all the rock and gravel these tires have seen. They still ride smooth as silk on the roadway, even at 30K miles.

Needless to say, I will very likely be buying these again. The only reason I would get a different set of tires in the future is just to give something different a try. If anyone has any questions let me know! I know I missed a lot of stuff but just wanted to give some general opinions because I don’t see many reviews of the Grabber ATXs.

I would guess based on the current treadwear that I will easily get 65K miles out of these. They do come with a 60K mile warranty on top of the 3PMS rating. What else could you ask for in a tire?

I think it’s the perfect tire for someone like me who does a massive amount of highway driving and also a lot of trail riding.

Some pictures of what the siping, tread pattern and tread depth look like at 30K miles:

As you can see, there is still a massive amount of depth left in the siping as well as the tread. Much better than some tires that have very shallow sipes that disappear after a short period of time.

    Hope this helps!

I'll add to this thread. On my first Frontier, I swapped to 17's and went with Falken Wildpeaks. They were absolute garbage for my experience. Those were the 265/70R17 SL 115T. One of my friends highly recommended the General Grabber A/Tx and so I decided to try, also 265/70R17 SL 115T. Compared to the Falkens they were way better. MPG returned, they didn't feel heavy, traction was good and they looked great.

I eventually traded that truck for a second Frontier. I wanted to take the 17's and Generals with me to the second truck, so part of the deal with the dealer was that they would swap the wheels and tires over for me. What I wanted them to do was just swap the wheels straight across, and I was going to reprogram the TPMS because I had the tool to do so. Unfortunately, that request didn't make it to the techs...they broke down all of the wheels and tires to keep the TPMS sensors with their respective trucks. Unfortunately, the tires were never the same after that. They shook on the highway.

So I don't fault General for that, as the tires were disturbed and I don't believe they were put back together properly after that. I have considered them again, but I am now on my 3rd set of Toyos between my Jeep and Tacoma, and I like them better. The Generals were very smooth compared to Falkens which shook pretty badly, but the Generals were not 100% perfectly smooth either. The Toyos are 100% smooth so that is what I have stuck with lately.

The Generals sure did look good though, and they handled well for what they were, with minimal noise and good traction.

My Grabbers developed a pretty noticeable shake on the highway but a road force balance completely fixed it, just as an FYI for anyone with that issue. Not saying it would have fixed yours but I wish someone had told me about the road force balance thing sooner!

That's good, unfortunately I ended up paying for a standard balance elsewhere as well as road force and nothing helped. Ended up doing Michelin Defenders on that truck until I traded it for the Tacoma, now I'm all Toyos until I find a reason to choose otherwise.
