So, ran the #'s of torque to weight (heaviest configuration for each gen).

    Gen 1 220 ft lb torque, 3705 lbs = 0.059 ft lb torque/lb
    Gen 2 266 ft lb torque, 4285 lbs = 0.062 ft lb torque/lb
    Gen 3 265 ft lb torque, 4480 lbs= .0059 ft lb torque/lb

Kinda sucks all these years later and the ratio isn't really improved. Gen 1 manual feels like it has low-end nuts when the supposedly more powerful 3.5 V6 feels like it is a 4 banger at low RPM. Thought a newer truck might feel more powerful but apparently not.

    Using listed weights,

    Gen 1 0.052 hp/lb
    Gen 2 0.056 hp/lb
    Gen 3 0.062 hp/lb

Looks like the HP would keep power at highway speeds better on newer gens. Something definitely noticable on the gen 1 was the lack of high-end power. Low-end was good, but passing power is bad on the gen 1.

they dont speak of that number bc apparently that number doesnt matter on tacomas. and although 3rd gen would be the highest it is irrelevant...

Op, you listed power to weight, but then compared torque to weight... Kind of misleading, isnt it? If you actually compare power to weight you may notice an improvement over the years.

That is true. Looks like TacoJohn listed HP to weight figures. I do think torque is more applicable than HP but it does look like the new Tacoma has a significant HP/LB ratio than the other gens. The gen 3 reaches its peak HP at 6,000 RPM where almost no one will drive. I chose the heaviest configs as a standard. Other configs should be RELATIVELY proportional.

that argument has been heard before but previous gen sees peak hp near redline as well. 6k isnt that high

Don't know why people are getting all defensive. OP just crunched some numbers and people are getting their panties in a bunch.

nobody has there panties in a bunch its just another thread to point out tq ratio when it was labeled power ratio and only to point out how disappointing it is... so we all have our opinions :)

Torque/HP to weight seem like perfectly measurable ratios. We can't really measure "awesomeness to pound" objectively.

No worries, my comment was a little abrasive. Apologies there.

power to weight ratios are nice with sports cars and tq to weight are great with hd trucks for towing, the awesomeness meter to weight ratio is the only ratio that applies to the tacoma lol

Yeah I was just curious to see what 20 years of automotive progress would produce in trucks. So I picked torque. Although power to weight seems relatively similar, towing has gone up, albeit very little from gen 2 to gen 3.

but why would it go up very much at all when this trucks design isnt for heavy hauling. its a "sport truck" imo. the hp went up by 42 but instead of people being impressed with that number they complain about it being useless and needing more tq but i guarantee if it was the other way around we would have had complaints about hp bc the 4.0 wasnt known for that. it was lacking to say the least...

Towing wouldn't go up much. Probably had more to do with the slightly-strengthened modified frame. Most people will say the 4.0 is a better towing engine. More peak torque (only 1 lb ft but still more) and it comes at lower RPM. People shouldn't be towing more than 3500 lbs regularly with these trucks anyway.

lmmfao. Another 3rd gen is slow or lacking power thread. I'm still trying to find that ultra fast 2nd gen..Mostly the drivers just look sad when they can't catch up..The wife or girl friend next to them smirks makes me want to slow down and get their numbers... lmmfao
