So it's more than a little embarrassing when I'm having a great Saturday with my girlfriend and my Taco runs out of gas. I had a bit of a reprieve when I was able to show her the gauge sitting on 1/8 and no light on but still embarrassing. Also, since we were in front of Home Depot I had to buy a gallon of canned gas for $23!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a search and found one other person who had this issue. Anyone else??

    Can you suggest a fix?

    Thanks

    Victor

Now that you know, fill up at 1/4 tank.

Quit taking it to the limit Kramer. Fuel pumps use the fuel around them to keep cool. Running your tank below 1/4 tank makes that pump run hot and cause premature failure. I don’t like to let my truck go below half a tank. Dropping the tank is a pain in the balls.

to me half a tank is empty when you run your tank down around 1/4 tank or less you are sucking all the water and dirt in the gas tank into the fuel pump and motor.

My truck does the same thing. Only way to fix is to replace the fuel pump in the tank. You can just replace the float and sending unit but just as cheap to do it all while it is out. Mine has been like that for almost 2 years. So I just use my trip and fill up that way.

I rarely look at my fuel gauge. The trip meter tells me when it is time to buy gas. After you've run a few tanks through it you'll know how much fuel it takes to fill up after "X" number of miles. There are times when it is OK to run it a little below 1/4 tank. If I'm traveling in an area where fuel stops are close enough I may run it below 1/4 tank. But in rural areas where fuel stops are farther apart no. And I don't park it for the night with less than 1/2 tank.

Or see if you can pull the gauge needle out rotate 1/8 - it may not work in Tacoma instrument but I did this once in my old Jeep and it worked.

95% of the time I don't fill up til the light comes on. I commute about 8 miles per day round trip. I fill up at Fred Meyer and like to use the fuel points to save as much as possible when I do fill up. Been doing this... nearly 4 years now, ever since I moved into my home. I've often waited two or three days of commutes after the light came on before heading to the gas station, putting me all the way down to E. Which, btw, I never am able to fill up more than about 18.2 gallons, even when right on E.

I'm not suggesting anyone do this. Just sharing what I've done, and not had anything happen (knock on wood). YMMV

I hope you didn’t put mix in your truck... Why would home depo sell a canned gallon of gas?
