Quick synopsis. Last July, I told Geico about the equipment I was adding to my truck during my build. I asked that they charge me what they needed to insure the for the value of the addition gear. They increased my 6 month policy by $75. This past December, I received a letter that states Geico will NOT insure my vehicle any longer due to the modifications that I did to it. I called them, they said that items I mentioned in July like the lift and winch suggest an off-road use that the vehicle was not intended nor designed, and that they do NOT cover.

Has anyone run into this? What insurance companies are people using to cover their builds?

    The letter:

Try Progressive. They are much easier to deal with.

State farm should cover you. And you can have an additional policy setup to cover add-on items as such.

They also cover stuff like track days/events so long as they arent timed or competitive fyi.

I have had farmers and state farm in the past with heavily modified muscle cars, and was covered without issue. I have had USAA now for a number of years, and havent had issue out of them either

Technically they didn't drop me. They refused to renew.

Personally I wouldn't mention anything extra added to my vehicle at all to an insurance company.

It's a Toyota truck with a vin number. That's all they need to know.

If something extra added gets damaged that's on me because I added it.

I thought that too but I researched this issue with Geico and found some insurance companies will void the policy and refuse to cover you in the event of an accident once the insurance adjuster sees the modifications.

Well... a couple comments after reading the thread:

    1. An insurance company can drop you for reasons they have received approval on from the State's insurance regulatory office.

    2. Geico must have received approval to drop customers in your State that use their vehicle for off-road use. Weird... why don't they just formulate an acceptable rate for off road vehicles ?

    3. You may always challenge them through procedure outlined to you when you receive their formal notice of cancellation.

    4. Yes, shop around, I'm sure you can find a good carrier that gives you an acceptable rate to insure your vehicle, aftermarket add-ons included.

    5. Stay away from Geico. They have the worst claim service of any company I've ever dealt with in my 10 years of claim handling.

My research strongly suggests that some insurance companies will void the policy and refuse to cover you in the event of an accident once the insurance adjuster sees the modifications.

Oh... by the way..... for those of you suggesting he not tell Geico about his aftermarket goodies: If you don't report them and something happens to them in an accident, or vandalism, or any other type of loss... don't expect them to be covered.

Wasn't designed to go off road? Did you show them the sticker?!

On topic: I'd look elsewhere for insurance, clearly Geico doesn't want your business. I've told my Allstate agent about mods in the past and he has never cared.
