I just removed what was left of my gas tank skid plate and when I took the 3 bolts out of the front the tank dropped about 1-2" (still had rear strap holding tank up). I jacked tank back up and put 3 bolts back in to hold my tank in place. This morning while filling my tank at the gas station (same gas station I always use) the pump kept shutting off like the tank was full. what could have I possibly done to my truck? I can't see that 1-2" drop at the front of my tank (momentarily) kinking anything? anyone have experience with these gas tanks and the venting system?

Did you get it to fill up?

Don't know what might have happened when you dropped the tank, but sometimes I get that same thing at the gas pump.

I have to pull the nozzle out a little, then it usually fills normally. Once in a while I have to fill the tank more slowly to get it to work.

I got it to fill up, I tried positioning the gas nozzle various ways and depths, all with no luck. had to pull the trigger 1/4 the way or less or else the gas would back up filler neck and give the pump a false full signal (shut pump off) i'll try a different pump later today, I hope it sorts itself out as I'm tired of working on this truck!

See what happens with your next fill up. Could be a bad pump.

any update on this? having the same exact problem. thought it was a sensitive pump here in CA, but every pump seems to have the same problem. If i hold the nozzle out of the tank i can see the gas shoot up the filler neck and almost spill over. is this a vent tube problem? maybe something clogging the neck?

My problem was a pump problem at the gas station. It only did it that one time. I would check for a vent problem in your case.

My dads truck has had this problem for years. My work truck does it too. Bet you bent the breather line a touch. Not getting enough air. I heard taping the end of the pump works too!

I had this problem a couple years ago. Mine was due to topping off the tank a little too often/much? Somehow the roll over valve got stuck. Was able to fix it by using a piece of 12ga copper wire and carefully clearing the filling tube.

I'm new member here and I stumbled across this looking for and answer to a problem I'm having with my 2004 Tacoma. During a fill up the filler neck foams up and shuts the pump off about 10 to 15 times every gallon. I pulled the filler neck out and checked the filler tube and vent hose. I didn't bother to check the charcoal EVAP system because those tubes connect to the top of the filler neck and I couldn't see how they would be a problem during a fill up and the check engine light should come on if that system was a problem. I couldn't see anything wrong so I put it back together and still had the problem. Again, I took the filler neck out again and this time I took the rubber tube off the tank that connects to the bottom end of the filler neck. I took a mirror and tried to look into the tank and there is a flap type valve there that I suppose is a rollover valve (I could find no mention of it in the repair manual). It looked a little bent so I stuck a rubber vacuum hose in there to see if it would open and it was stuck. I used a screwdriver and gave it a good push and it opened up and worked freely after that. I put it all together and went to the gas station and had no problem filling the tank. My guess someone tried to steal my gas and put siphon hose in the tank and damaged that valve when removing the siphon hose. The problem is fixed and it was a damaged rollover valve inside the gas tank where the filler neck nipple is.
