I have a 2013 SR5 and it seems to always overfill and puke out gas when the pump clicks off. I am not trying to overfill it, in fact lately I have been slowing the pump down when I know I am getting close to full and hoping it doesn't spill out. My wife has a 2013 Rav4 and it does it as well. Not cool having gas puke out on your paint once a week.

Anyone else experience this? I am going to ask the dealership about it at my first oil change.

x2 usually it's the station's pump that causes this. Not always, but usually in my expirience.

I've only had this happen once. Avoided that pump since and been fine.

Mine doesn't do this. Have you tried other stations to see if their pumps do it as well?

Its either the pump or the pumper but not the vehicles.

Happened to me twice on two different pumps at the same gas station. Haven't been back and has never done it again. Just crappy maintenance of the stations equipment. You might report the station to your Provence's version of a Corporation Commission (that's what it is called here in Oklahoma). Basically the entity that monitors stations, to make sure they are compliant with laws, a gal is actually a gal, etc.

I had the exact opposite happen in a little Kia I had years ago. At every gas station it wouldn't allow me to fill up because the gas pump would shut off after filling up a quarter of the way. This happened ALL the time and at every different gas station I went to. I would even try to very slowly pump the gas and even that didn't work. Even tried holding the pump at different angles, still would shut off. Never figured out what it was, sold it at auction.

But to answer the OP question, it's probably the gas station, not the vehicle, as it was in my case.

The car has nothing to do with that, I would let the pump attendant know to get their shit fixed.

Overflowing your gas tank can REALLY cause nightmares with your EVAP system. I always find it funny for the people who keep dumping away after the pump clicked it off. Not knowing they can cause thousands of dollars in damage from a few cents extra of gas.

+1 to all of the above.

There are two Chevron stations near me that I can't use because there is a problem with the evap system at the station... gas goes in, I can feel the boot expanding, and the pump clicks off every gallon or two. Break the seal between the boot and fill pipe and I head and feel a "whoosh"
I have to keep a finger jammed between the boot and fill pipe to get gas at those stations.

Never had a problem at any other station.... but neither station was a problem for my '08 4-Runner company car.

Ya... about $350 in parts. Probably $600 if you have the dealer do the work.

I just did my water pump. Dealer quoted $513.
I spent $200 at Camelback, plus another $80 at the dealership for coolant (bought 3 gallons, didn't need more than 2).... AND I've now got new hoses and belt. That likely would have been an extra $200 had I wanted the dealer to do it (serp belt alone is $74 from Camelback!)

    Yea it's $350 from dealer
Install is super simple as long as the tank is low with fuel. Going to buy used for $80 online Idc so long as it works and no check engine light

Tell the gas station you're going to to fix their crap. This happened to me once and it ticked me off. I just happened to be leaning on the truck while filling up that day.

The pumps have a sensor at the bottom of the nozzle that shuts off the pump when the gas fills.

    Your vehicles are fine

OP needs to chime in on whether this is happening at the same station, and what exactly is meant by ' seems to always overfill'. From day 1, always, mostly always, every time, some of the time...? There's a lot of detail missing here.

I was talking people doing this to their cars in general, not just tacomas. Few hundred won't get you anything but laughed at with a new BMW or Mercedes.

I have a company gas card so limited to stations I can fill up at but it has happened at 2 different stations. Seemed strange our RAV4 is doing it too as she fills up at different station as well. I will try different pumps as per suggestions and advise.

One more suggestion if that does not work. Based on the gage and mileage you should be able to estimate about how much it will hold. Turn it off well before that amount. You won't be full but your paint will not suffer either.

Just FYI for anyone that this happens to, most of the time I've found that it is your fuel tank vent hose that is clogged. Have had to clean out a few of these for friends over the years. Damn Dirt Daubers build nest in them. lol

Any tips on cleaning the vent hose? This is a new one for me.
