Hey guys, I’m having an issue where the gas pump will keep clicking when I’m trying to add fuel. It’s annoying having to stand there and keep pulling the handle and watching the gauge.

I tried seeing if there were threads on this already but I couldn’t find anything.

has anyone had this problem and found a remedy?

Try setting the gas nozzle trigger at a lower level.

This would work but the goal is to be able to set the pump and walk away.

Also don’t want to guess when it’s full or fill my canister with fuel by accident.

Wow you can walk away from a pump while in use.

Here that would be a very expensive fine .

Pumps are set to high speed to create air so you get the illusion of a full tank

    Hmm

this must be a California thing then.

here we can lock the pump nozzle and it automatically shuts/clicks off when it’s full.

by walk away I mean not have to manually hold the trigger. Maybe I should have said step away lol

For a temporary fix try holding the handle upside down when filling

Most all the hold open devices seem to have been removed from the handle.

The problem is people get distracted and drive off with the nozzle still in the vehicle.

Leading to having break away nozzles to keep from pulling the hose off the pump causing even more $$$ damage.

I have a friend all he did was install new nozzles at the company stations.

I’ve personally seen this happen a few times at gas stations in California

I've noticed this happening at certain gas stations but never consistently, so I've always just assumed it was something to do with the pump itself at that station.

Most pumps have a shelf life of a few years, and rarely get serviced or replaced in that interval so it's fairly common to come across one that isn't functioning as well as it should.

Does it do this at every gas station you go to or just the same one?

I must say that it doesn’t do it at every gas station. But the one I go to the most near my house has never had an issue with my Prius but always has an issue with my Tacoma. If I get the nozzle in the perfect position it will work better but that rarely happens. I usually just watch my gauge and manually hold the pump while lightly pulling the trigger.

Check out that article I linked, there are some variables that make this more likely to happen with some vehicles vs others just by design.
