I have a 2021 TRD Sport with just about 3,000 miles on it now. I continue to be amazed at how poor the gas mileage is on this vehicle. Even on the highway, can't get more than 17.6 MPG according to the vehicle display. What is everyone else getting in terms of MPG ?

Ignore the display. It is using an average and guessing at fuel consumption.

I hate to say, but use the ol' school method. Next time you fill, zero one of the trip meters. At the next fill, record the mileage from the trip meter and the gallons to fill. Now, divide the miles by gallons. This is your mpg over a tank of fuel.

    Other thoughts.
Have you done any mods? Tires, lift, armor, winch, bumpers.
Are you carrying any weight in the truck?
    How fast are you driving?

It’s a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick. You don’t buy this kind of vehicle to get good fuel economy. What did you expect?

The stock display is a turd. But yourself a scan gauge, use it.

2021 SR DCSB 4x4 v6 here, I get basically 17.5-18.5 driving normally (mostly highway and keeping around 65-70mph). When doing more city driving or just going faster it's around 17-17.5. I get 16.5 pulling a small trailer with a 600lb ATV but to be fair that's shorter distance start-stop driving fairly similar to city, so it'd probably be better on longer highway stretches. I also did not notice any change (maybe a slight increase in mpg actually) when I switched from the factory steel wheels and 245/75/r16's to aftermarket 16x8 alloy wheels and 265/75/r16's.

FWIW, I have a 2019 TRD Sport with everything stock. My highway mileages on 87 octane are this:

    22-23 mpg going 70-80 mph
    23-24 mpg going 60-70 mph
    24-26 mpg going 50-60 mph

The mpgs are what I see on the dash regularly during commutes. I have manually calculated many times and the dash is always within 0.5 or less.

I am in Maryland, so it isn't mountainous highways, but there are hills. I did have the TSB done to fix the gear holding problem on the highway inclines.

    4 years and 4 months, 59,000kms life time mileage 95% city is 15.9l per 100kms. (14.9mpg) I didn't buy a Prius!!! It's a 4wd truck.

(Data is calculated on an excel spread sheet not the dash)

13-15mpg for me, but really it's all from the wheels/tires. Wide 33's E-rated. Dropped that shit like 4 mpg.
    ...And I want 35s.

Driving conditions make a difference. If I'm gaining elevation, in the mountains, or at higher altitudes I get highway milage around 18 mpg (average over 100 plus miles), if I'm on a level road at sea level I can average around 22 mpg. This is in an Off Road with stock tire size.

In the city I can see an average of 11 or 12 mpg if having to stop a lot.

I got a Tacoma because it is a boring, naturally aspirated engine that should last. If mpg was most important I would have gone with something like a Ford that puts an engine in which is too small and runs it hot as hell to make power. I don't see that as a recipe for durability though.

Tacos are not small trucks either. My 1st gen is, but my 3rd gen is solidly in the midsized range. The fact that a larger, heavier truck with a 3.5L V6 gets better gas milage than a smaller, lighter, truck with a 2.7L 4 cylinder is impressive to me (my 1st gen gets 16-20 mpg on the highway).

That said, how you drive might be the issue (and might not be) as well as where you drive. Or, you could have a turd, turd gen.

    Yup this.

I lost about 4-5MPG from 285/75/16 MT E-rated tires and a susp lift. Even after adding full armor, winch, and carrying around my rooftop tent, I only noticed maybe a 1MPG drop from those. Tires and lift are the biggest offenders.
