I'm looking to buy 2016+ upgrade in the next 6 mos - I have a 2008 SR manual and I like manuals over automatic (more active driving feel, vroom vroom). However, I see on the newest generation specs that manuals get worse gas mileage than automatics? Toyota reports 17/20 for MTs, and 19/24 for AT. I consistently get 24 MPG on my MT (I drive easy with it, mostly highway miles). Why is this? I always thought MT got better gas mileage.

(Aaaaand here's where I admit my niavete/ignorance about auto mechanics, but I learn fast!

BTW, that Crawl feature looks pretty cool. Do MTs have that too? (back to specs to find out....)

AT gets better mileage on the Tacoma for sure, mostly thanks to the 4.3 gearing, but also because the AT constantly is seeking the highest gear possible. I've gotten 21+ mpg before out of my MT though, highway only.

No MT do not have crawl control. Don’t worry about gas mileage it’s a truck.

3rd Gen Manual Sports have 4.30 gears.

Like others have said, mileage will be all over the place with gas quality summer and winter, temperature, driving habits, hauling, city, highway, etc. But, you already know that having a truck.

If you’re really worried about gas mileage buy a car. IMHO keep the 2008 Tacoma.

Modern AT’s are very intelligent and are better at selecting gears than most people.

Be aware that to get a manual in 2018 you have to get the V6. If you can find a 2.7 manual in a 2016/2017 then you might want to consider that.

I think you need to start at the beginning. Taking a guess here given the info you’ve written and what you have not.

My guess is that you have not even driven a manual 2016+ Tacoma yet. Go to the dealership grab a used manual and take it for a nice long drive. If it drives as nice or better than what you have now, put it on the buy list. If it drives worse go for the auto. Lol or as someone above said keep your current truck.

(If you wrote I took a 16 for a drive and am wondering why it states the milage is lower then auto I would not have written the above.)

As per milage - if you drive on highways at 60mph you can get good numbers. Anything above that and the truck becomes a brick with wind resistance and for every 5mph you can see your consumption get worse.

Gearing and the fact that autos can optimize shifting for fuel economy.

Get the manual transmission in the 3rd gen you will be much happier in the long run. If you can’t afford the loss in MPGs keep saving until you can.

    I'm getting 20-25 in my 3rd gen, 5spd, 2.7l.

My dad gets about 16-17 in his 3rd gen auto v6.

I get around 12.7 l/100 km on the highway, 15.1 in the city with my manual transmission model that has heavy E-rated KO2 tires that lift the truck around 23 mm. If you are concerned about mileage, I'd say get the automatic, it is better at shifting than you are (or at least I am).

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.
I get anywhere from 16 to 21 mpg in my manual. The manuals have lower gearing than the autos, that's why they don't get the same mileage. I also have 265/75R16 Toyo AT tires.

Also MT off roads get ATRAC which is a very useful off road tool the autos don't have (crawl control instead).

If you drive mostly highway count on about ~18mpg. Use higher octane you do a little bit better. Not a lot and not worth the extra $ but a little better.

I easily and consistently get 22 to 24 on my MT in the Summer and Winter ~ 20 to 22. My cousin with the AT does not get near this granted he has the next KO Bros size tire 265/70/17 (I believe)

I have a manual, and just completed a 3600 mile trip, 20.8 mpg, that was going 78 mph, with the air on the whole time, and the bed was fully loaded.

My 17 sport auto gets about 21 when I drive it easy. Leasing a manual OR next month so I am hoping I can still maintain above 20 mpg.
