Just installed an aluminum gas cap holder, you can find them in ABS Plastic and this one in Aluminum. The aluminum one was only $2.00 dollars more than the ABS Plastic ones so I went with the aluminum one.

Install was fast and easy took about 30 seconds to install it. You have to remove the screw that secures the clip that holds the fuel door closed, the kit comes with a new screw but you can reuse the original if it is in good shape. Mine is a 2023 Tacoma that was manufactured in 05/2023 so the screw was in great shape. Mine was not overly tight and unscrewed without any issues.

The aluminum piece you slide into the open space of the inside frame of the fuel door, the aluminum gas cap holder has a slot cut into the right side of if that the edge of the inside frame slides into, it is a firm fit. I put blue loctite on the screw and reinstalled the original screw and tightened it. Job done. See photos. IMG_9615.jpgIMG_9616.jpg

It's literally that easy and to hang the gas cap by the tether lol. Whatever works for you!

Like wearing a belt and suspenders at the same time. Toyota gave you one that is easy. You spent money on one that is easy.

The problem with hanging the fuel cap is you have to have the plastic line stretched to do it, I did not like hanging it like that, the fuel cap holder is a better solution, besides Toyota has used a similar design on other vehicles and from my understanding even the Tacoma in the past. The plastic line with the little zig zag on one end was likely a cost saving decision by some bean counter that only saved 2 cents per truck. For $15.00 I would rather have the aluminum fuel cap holder.

I couldn't get the screw off, and I wasn't going to force it. Whichever one I bought, the left part goes behind the screw, and it still works. I do prefer it then hanging the cap. Don't know why my (older) 4Runner has that built in but not the Tacoma?!

To COMFORTABLY hang it from the tether on my 23, I had to move it over. Doing so, the door would not fully open until I removed the gas cap.

Added a (plastic?) holder to my DS-18 order, took about 1 minute because I moved the tether back to original location.

    Wife's 19 Highlander has a holder from the factory . . . Son's 17 Yaris has a holder from the factory

I use the same gas cap holder - but I also use a lockable gas cap. Unfortunately, that gas cap does not have a plastic tether.

Are you sure that black piece on the left of the holder doesn’t go behind the gray painted area that the screw goes into? Never knew they made aluminum ones.

There is a welded nut on the back side, the aluminum piece has to go on the front on the left side. The right side has a slot milled into the aluminum that engages the inside frame of the door cover.

More like wearing a belt or suspenders with overalls.

If you don't want one don't buy one, pretty simple if you ask me. My money, I will spend it on what I feel adds value to my truck.
