Gas can storage in the bed?

Have spent about an hour doing searches, so far have come up with nothing.

I am looking for a gas can carrier system that bolts onto the bed rails of my 3rd gen short bed. And cans that are short enough so that I can close the tonneau cover. I'd like to be able to carry two 20 litre fuel containers.

Can anyone suggest a can/carrier combination that will work? I have seen pics of many carriers but they will all prevent me from closing the tonneau cover. My gas cans are not going to be in my possession too long if they are in plain view and accessible.

I’m fairly certain that rotopax makes a mount that allows you to mount smaller cans that can sit below the level of the tonneau cover. Maybe others can weigh in on specific product numbers or with pics of their setups. I know I’ve seen it done.

You may have to jerry-rig a bracket that drops the rotopax mount down low enough.

Yep. No need for expensive brackets or complicated storage systems.

I lined my bed with a bunch of similar stainless D rings. I can hold/haul pretty much anything. What I need to store back there changes depending on how long I'll be gone, and where I'm going, what I'm doing. It's nice to just tie everything down with some ratchet straps and be able to move it around as necessary.

This is what I ended up doing. It is not super pretty, don't judge.

Those D rings are a bit big, but you can still open the compartment if you want.

I got the rubber straps from Princess Auto, made of the finest Chinesium. $3.50 each. I may cut the ends off to make them look neater.

So far can has not moved a centimetre, but I might try to restrain it vertically at some point.

It is a 25 litre can, I carry it mainly to help out other people but it would give me another 166 km of range if I ever needed it.

Just loop the upper strap through the handle and across the front, and back to the back side.

I have a 5 gallon can and use the front bed rail with a strap. Fits under the tonneau .

I have just one small Rotopax mounted but they make bigger tanks and dual mounts.

I ghetto fab'd mine and so far have been pleased. I keep it back there 24/7 unless I'm going through a car wash (not that it would hurt anyway) and cycle the fuel every 3 months while adding a small amount of Seafoam or other stabilizer each time.

Got these at Tractor Supply.. 1/4" cold shut wire hook. The end of the hook that is directly in front of the eye has to be bent sideways a bit to allow the bolt to pass through. $1.25 ea.

Another one.. I like this setup for picking up fuel for the lawnmowers or dropping off waste oil..
    IMG_20190527_142333933_HDR.jpg
Basically, 1 full 2x4, then the one closest to the tailgate cut to the size of your favorite milk crate, screw a vertical leg to it..
    IMG_20190527_142424907.jpg
    Then, install cargo!
IMG_20190527_142506678.jpg Both horizontal pieces need to be fastened to each other either temporarily or permanently. Use screws, bungee cord or duct tape. I choose to do it temporarily because sometimes I need 2 full 2x4's across for other jobs. I can switch quickly this way.

I used stainless steel. Works great. Use it mostly for refueling the lawn mower.

Is that the Smittybuilt jerry can mount? I've heard mixed reviews on whether it's worth it or not with regards to build quality. Your thoughts?
