Hi everyone so I was dumb and blew the 80A fuse, I am trying to find instructions on removing the fuse box to get to the 80A fuse that's secured by bolts.

The closest thing I found was this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO9UgFbt1tY ,

but it is not the same.

My 1999 tacoma fuse box have 4 tabs that protrudes out of the side almost 1/4" , and they are really tight fitting.. i can't push them in much at all.

So I want to ask here first before I monkey my way and break the tabs in/out :

How to do you get to that 80A fuse!?

My 5-Lug blew a metric ton of fuses in and outside of the cab, including the main 80A fuse in the engine bay fuse box after someone reverse-jumped it. What you have to do is remove the 3 bolts that hold the fuse box to the truck, and push in the plastic retaining clips separating the top and bottom of it. The 80A fuse is held in with a bolt, which is why it doesn't pull out like your traditional fuse.

    Thanks for the reply!

Push " in " you say? Ok I wanted to make sure, because that's a LOT of tab to push in. Heck they are not even a tab they are more like a solid plastic knob.

    Thanks!

Take a picture of the mechanism, let's make sure it's the right one. Lol.

I see three tabs/knobs, one on top middle, one on lower left, and one on bottom right. .... Thanks!

Those are the right tabs. Push inwards and down while simultaneously pulling up on the housing.

Ok it was a giant PITA and I end up calling BCAA and it took the two of us over 30 minutes to wrangle it out. Basically had to destroy all three tabs and yank the bottom half away to get to the bolts. A lot screw driver jabbing and prying right behind your wiring harness.

    IMG_6168.jpg IMG_6173.jpg

But at least we got it done and luckily it was only the 80A fuse and everything else was still good.

After changing the fuse I am back and running in less than 10 minutes.

I don't think the fuse box has been touched since it came off the assembly line 19 years ago so yeah, it was SNUG.

It's pretty loose now though! Hhahahaha

But that 80A fuse placement is still terrible.

I lifted the top part out. there's 4 tabs that hold the relays and fuses part. Left the bottom bolted down. Grab the inside part with apair of needle nose and lifted while prying the 4 tabs out.

Identical, the fuse box physically never changed from 1995-2004.

Good. Because I had a stupid mishap today and the truck is dead. I found the ALT 120a fuse was blown, hopefully that fixes it and I didnt fry the ECU or anything.

Yup that's what that fuse is for. I reverse jumped my old blue truck and it blew the 120a fuse, and the EFI fuse blew.

I’m still struggling to separate the upper portion of the fuse box. In the attached image, I have a screw driver inserted behind the catch tab, levering it open. The second image shows the same tab without the driver; behind the tab is a protruding D-shaped element- while levering the tab open, this D-element may be forced back into the box- but not completely, and not without risking destruction of the tab and surrounding bezel. It sure seems that just levering the tab open is insufficient remedy for freeing the upper portion of the fuse box. Any insight will be appreciated- but please, please, be painfully explicit, with hand-here-tool-this-way instruction, because I’m missing something.

Update: I got it after reviewing previous images and discarding this account by mechanicjon:

“I lifted the top part out. there's 4 tabs that hold the relays and fuses part. Left the bottom bolted down. Grab the inside part with apair of needle nose and lifted while prying the 4 tabs out.”

Contrary to this claim, it’s impossible to separate the upper and lower box without unbolting the box on my ‘98- and the inner, lower portion of the box can’t be pulled up-and-out. If you are struggling, unbolt the box, lever all the tabs out, and it will easily separate by reaching into the box and pushing with one hand while holding the outer box with the other.
