I was taking off the fuel tank guard when I found some rust underneath the paint. It's not aweful but it's not going to get any better. With new tanks only being $170 would it be better to just get a new one? Let me know what you think, thanks.[IMG]

    Welcome aboard new member
If it we're mine I would replace the tank, pump and other parts with new.

If it's not leaking, it's up to you really

Why not try to fix what you have if it's still good? A good sanding and some new paint will take care of this
Then if you aren't tight on cash right now, there's no problem replacing it all either

In the end, it all depends on if you want to put some of your time on sanding it down it or not

Then I would take the opportunity to take a look at the rest of the frame to see if there isn't some bad rust spots too. Erspecially where the leaf springs attach to the frame, right behind the cab then the inner frame rails by the gas tank and catalytic converter (these are worst areas for rust)

I'd sand and paint it. Maybe tap it with a hammer to check that it's still solid. Probably do that with an almost empty tank just in case. You will likely get an evap leak code when it starts to weep gas. I doubt itll happen all at once with a big hole in it. I have a hairline crack in the bottom of mine that weeps. Doesn't drip.

That looks awfully bubbly and rusty.

Sure, you could patch it, but you're more than likely to just start chasing holes and patching them.

Start fresh with a new tank, and treat/paint it and you'll never have to worry about it again.

I tried fixing one that looked similar. It was off a Corolla. It was just a matter of not having the money at that time.

After I scraped and sanded it down, there were over 20 places I ended up soldering. Amazing what the mastic coating was holding in. The rust was under there, basically preventing the leaks from happening. I imagine I was one really hot day (over pressurization) away from having fuel all over the street.

If you are questioning the integrity of the tank, just replace it. How much would a tow cost if all the fuel leaks out, or worst case a fire.
