I just got back from the dealership for the rear-end whine and and second whine coming from the back of my truck. When you open my sliding rear window you can hear what sounds like the electric fuel pump plain as day. It is present from 30 mph up to 70 or so where wind noise starts to drown it out. It is annoying loud, much like Cicadas in the midwest during the summer.

As soon as you shut the window it is muffled. The problem is, I love having my windows down.

The mechanic/and GM that went for the ride along said they can't fix it since it is pumping. I test drove another identical truck on the lot and it wasn't making this noise.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Thanks, though I wouldn't consider this to be a chirping noise. It sounds exactly like a cheap electric fuel pump from Autozone mounted to the back window. The noise is pretty well constant. If you are going highway speed and drop it to neutral and the engine idles down the noise is still there as well so it doesnt seem to be rpm dependent.

The High Pressure Fuel Pump that is mentioned above is under the hood, and it chirps like crickets.

want some cheese with that Whine? does it make the same noise when the car is sitting still? and running.
the fuel pump in the tank runs all the time when engine is running. and does not change rpm for engine load.
if you can hear it with the truck stopped and running it could be the pump. but you should be able to get out and lay under the truck and hear it coming from the tank. also.

Yes, cheese please....I would prefer a ride in the wambulance though :)

The noise isn't made while at a stand still with the engine running. It doesn't sound like the pre-start prime either.

I have the exact same noise from my pump that you have. I know this is an old thread but did you get it fixed. if I used Techstream and activate the pump on low duty cycle I can replicate the noise.

i have a 17 OR and mine does this, with rear window open at moderate speeds, it sounds like a metallic spinning whining sound, pitch does not change.

They won’t acknowledge it as being a problem. Your pump is pumping, it isn’t broken, normal characteristic

Well we will see. I've decided to trade the Tacoma in for a Tundra and disclosed the pump noise. The sales side said they would fix it under the powertrain warranty but if the service end declines the repair it wont effect my trade because "there is nothing wrong with it".

Mine is most noticeable when sitting in traffic or the drive through line. Almost sounds like a bad pulley or belt. It is pretty annoying. I’ve heard that they all make the noise.

You're talking about the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) that sounds like crickets or tensioner pulley from under the hood . If you have anything worthy of contributing to that issue, please post here.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/t-sb-0016-18-chirping-noise-fm-high-press-fuel-pump.542250/

Otherwise, this thread is talking about the fuel pump that is in the fuel tank and the sound that emanates from the rear of the vehicle.

887s on 5100s, OME HD springs, ECGS bushing, LR UCAs, leer 100r, non-OEM TRD pro grille (sensors work). It'll be an overland rig one day.
I know this thread is old but I recently lifted my truck and want to rule out this noise. I did have to do a fairly extreme CB drop kit to stop driveline vibrations (they're there still, but only very subtly from 20 to 27mph)

So; a constant volume, Cicada-like sound starting around 30mph and not changing at all with added speed up to 70, is likely fuel tank fuel pump whine(low pressure pump in the actual tank, NOT hi-press under hood)? The sound completely dissapears at lower speeds. I have not tried slapping it in neutral yet but will on my drive home today, if the sound goes away doing that I'll come here and leave an edit.

I'm constantly paranoid about my U-Joints ever since the lift and this sound just seemed weird, so if someone could give me some piece of mind I'd be eternally grateful.

for everyone citing the HPFP thats in the FRONT under the HOOD thats a completely different sound.

This sound is only audible explicitly when the rear window is open, i have extensively researched this issue and i still dont know what it is but to describe it a 'shimmering' or 'cicadas in the summer' is the closest way to describe it.

The high pressure fuel pump is under the hood, you usually will notice it if you get beside a building or an enclosed space.
