Morning fellow Tacomians! Getting ready to purchase the URD fuel pump upgrade. Left brain is fighting with right brain about the Walbro or the Deatschwerks. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I already know the Walbro makes more noise. What else?

The Walboro on my 04 whines like a stuck pig when it's hot out, drives me crazy. Sometimes I can hear it in the cab on the freeway with the windows up, it can get that loud. Then it'll be quiet for weeks on end. Seems to be based on outside temperature though. Anyway, if I had known I might have looked into something different because its annoying.

Getting the Urd kit. That's not an option.

I briefly looked at the URD kit online awhile back. I'm done with suspension upgrades (for awhile) and not ready to spend on gears and lockers, so I feel upgrading the pump and having a replaceable filter would be a good choice for my next upgrade.

Yeah, it is what it is. It really freaked me out at first because I didn't know that they were known for that, and I thought it was about to fail on me (I was offroading in a pretty remote area when it first happened). After some brief research though it turns out that Walboro pumps are just known to whine and hiss from time to time. Just something to learn to live with I guess

I think I'm gonna go with the DW guys. Thanks for your comments.

Do you mean the stock replacement, or an upgraded Denso?

I just assumed a supercharger was in the mix here...otherwise why upgrade the fuel pump?

Though I think the URD kit for 2nd gens puts the fuel filter outside of the tank so I guess that would be a reason to upgrade to that kit, if you wanted an easily accessible filter.

If it had the option of an easily replaceable filter, it would be better, I've clogged filters in other vehicles enough to drastically reduce performance. Just because it comes stock on the truck doesn't mean it's best though.

Yes, I do have have a supercharger. That's what initially started this but the exterior filter is also a must I think.

I have no intent on going SC, but want the filter. And an upgraded pump can't hurt on an overweight pig like mine.

Stock pumps on the 2nd gens are known to have clogged internal tank filters as early as 30k miles. The upgraded pups have external filters (like your first gen) which are much more desirable. Also the stock 2nd gen pump is VERY marginal with being able to deliver fuel to a stock SC'd motor with a perfectly clean filter, start clogging the filter up and you will run lean on a SC'd motor and can even be bad enough to do the same on a NA'd motor. FYI i feel as though i read somewhere the 4runners with the same single vvti 1gr have bigger fuel pumps (to be able to support the older 4.7L v8)

I am going to be doing the pump upgrade as well soonish... and was debating on the pump as well.... hmmm.

For 5 bucks more for the DW pump, that is e85 compatible.... i might go that route, not that id run e85 but that means it will be much happier with the shitty California ethanol blend.

You are correct about the 4Runners' pumps.

An ethanol rated pump is good insurance against ethanol in the gas. Since ethanol does not lubricate like gasoline.

I'm still not sold that the stock pumps and filters are getting clogged so easily. If it was really hurting performance, the only way that would be possible is by low fuel pressure and volume delivery. If that was happening, you'd be running hella lean and people would see blown up motors frequently. And if anything, we'd all be getting better gas mileage since it was lean, right? Can someone explain to me why none of that is happening?
