My truck has hit 150,000 and all the major stuff like alternator and water pump has been replaced, except for fuel pump.

In general I like to replace things before they leave me stranded.

For those who have ran an original fuel pump to failure, how many miles did you get out of it?

19 years old and 130,000 on my truck and I was thinking about the same thing......
I used to work at an auto parts store and some guys say they got well over 200,000 on their original pumps. Personally I’d start to worry after 150,000.

I'm still using the original fuel pump - 20 years - 355K miles. I plan on using the fuel pump until it breaks. Dropping the tank or removing the bed sounds like a lot of work.

if you continually run the tank dry then the service life is reduced. Having a fuel pump sitting in cool fuel extends it electical life.

Excellent point and I hadn't thought about that. I have a habit of waiting on the "low fuel" light before filling it up.

how??? Mine was starting to go out around 180k. Do you fill up when you hit 1/4 tank or something?

    I believe it's considered a "lifetime" part.

As someone already said, dropping the tank sounds like a pain in the ass to do as part of "routine" preventative maintenance.

You'd likely see it throwing some low fuel pressure codes or other warning signs. That's when you replace it...

Same here - a little less miles but 4 years more. I hope I'll never need to replace it.:fingerscrossed:. By the way other "attachments" are also original: alternator, water pump, power steering, AC compressor and starter.

Someone on another thread mentioned just tilting the bed ( only loosen bolts on passenger side ) ......I think I will try that method if my pump ever failed.
On my old 1988 Chevy I cut a hole in the bed since everything was so rusted and nasty underneath.

the only thing on mine still original from your list is the PS pump!

Are there any special things y'all are doing to keep the fuel pumps lasting as long as they do?

The bed is easy to remove. Just two people to carry it.
Or.....remove the bolts and put some 4x4 blocks under it to change the fuel pump.

The gas tank isn't that hard to remove. But....having done both. I'd choose to remove the bed from now on.

I haven't paid any attention to keeping the tank full - just lucky that it has lasted this long, I guess! I do often fill up at 1/2 or 1/4 tank, but that's just because I drive so much I'd rather start the day off with a full tank at a station I know instead of trying to find a stop later in the day.

I also went 300K on the original fuel filter. *shrug*

Do you get any kind of warning before a pump fails?

On one of my cars, the pump starts making a loud humming noise -- even with a full tank that you can hear inside the cabin. That gives you about 15 to 30 miles to get it resolved before it shuts down. Others give no warning and seem to fail after 20 years.

@mechanicjon I have 271,000 miles on my DC. Isn’t it more difficult to change the fuel pump on a DC than an extra cab? Since part of the tank is under the cab? I thought I read somewhere on TW that you can’t just take the bed off. You have to drop the tank. Or am I thinking about something else?
    Thanks!

For me, mine started taking a long time to fire up, multiple cranks, after sitting for a short period of time after driving.
