Hello! I'm new to the Tacoma World! Just picked up a 2014 Tacoma Access Cab 2.7L 4x4 manual with 98,000 miles. Truck is stock

I have been experiencing long starts or two tries to start. Spark plugs, throttle body cleaned, MAF cleaned, new battery, and fuel pump assembly (installed myself)

Took it to Toyota today had them check fuel pressure, starter, and alternator. Came back as fuel pump check valve not holding fuel pressure? He said my fuel pressure is at 60psi. Also said my gas is going back into the gas tank when I park and that's why it has long starts. They want me to replace the fuel pump and re-test. $1,240 bucks haha

    No check engine light

Anyone out there with experience with a fuel pump check valve? Is this within the fuel pump or a hose with a valve?

    Thanks

****Edit cause was leaking fuel injector. Led into a cylinder 1 misfire, ignition coils went next, and then burned out my ecm.

Yeah I read that thread. When I went to change the fuel pump the previous owner already changed it with a Napa Auto fuel pump and it had the same symptoms (previous owner removed the bed and stripped a few bolts) I had to drop the tank it was a nightmare. The fuel pump I bought does have a lifetime warranty tho. I seriously don't think it's the fuel pump. The fuel pressure regulator looks cheap and easy probably will try that next. I couldn't find a lot of information on the fuel pump check valve tho. Only found 4 runner guys with the issue

I honestly don’t know where the check valve is, but I think it’s in the pump?
As for the FPR, might as well change it, if it’s cheap enough.

How does it start first thing in the morning?

How about after driving for an hour, then letting it sit for an hour?

If it starts hard after sitting for an hour or so it could be leaky fuel injectors.

No miss firing but yeah leaky fuel injector could be a thing also. It's honestly at random. Sometimes it starts good, sometimes its a long crank or two cranks. Will see how it starts tomorrow morning. Wish it would just throw a code so I can move on from this issue haha

60 PSI sounds like they dead headed the pump into a gauge instead of connecting with a tee fitting. That is because the fuel rail regulator isn't in the circuit when you dead head it.

Tank >> Filter >> Pump >> Fuel delivery tubing >> Fuel Rail >> Fuel Rail Regulator ( Set to ~ 40 - 41.7 PSI) >> Return to tank.

If you tee into the delivery tubing the regulator still works and reads the regulated pressure ~ 40 - 41.7 PSI.

If you dead head a gauge at the delivery tube it reads full pump pressure ~ 60 PSI.

    While idling:
    Standard: (40.8 to 41.7 psi)
    • If the pressure is too high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
    • If the pressure is too low, check the connection between the fuel hose and fuel pump.

    Stop the engine.
Check that the fuel pressure does not change for 5 minutes.
Standard: (21 psi)If the pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injector.

all excess fuel is returned to the tank

fuel isnt held at max all the time

parked with switch off some will return to the tank

the check valve keeps a reasonable amount for the n e x t start

makes no sense to pull fuel 15feet again......... that would result in a long start

    what condition the plugs................

pulling the spark plugs might indicate if U have a leaky injector

I got the fuel pressure checked at a Toyota dealership. I hope they did it right? 150 bucks just to get it diagnosed!

The spark plugs weren't black when I changed them. Where is the check valve located tho? Within the fuel pump or external?

Turn the key to ON (last click before start). Wait 5 secs, turn key back off, turn key back to ON and wait 5 secs before starting, does it start up like normal?

not sure what brand ‘ fuel pump ‘ part.........................sometimes agood argument for OEM parts !!

most o the time lil to no disappointments

true they cost more ..................yet at the mileage maybe the last 1 U will need

oem parts tho not perfect set the bar for reasonable expectations

$1200 is outrageous to replace pump that U have already replaced

If a fuel injector was leaking the cel would likely be on with fuel trim codes

Tee in a fuel pressure gauge like Jimmy was saying, let it sit overnight, try to start it in the morning and see if the fuel pressure shows up quickly.

It just cycled through a tank of 91 and fuel system cleaner that I put in after changing the fuel pump. Has been starting better. I didn't do too much driving this weekend. Will order a fuel pressure gauge
