Yep, normal. More so if you add more after the pump stops.

Normally the gauge goes down a quarter after 50-60 miles but it just stays full. I know there is something wrong with the gauge or fuel pump.

So no matter how far you drive the gauge stays at the full mark? If so there is nothing wrong with the pump it is the sending unit or the circuit for the sending unit. This is in the fuel tank attached to the pump assembly.

That does not sound too abnormal, depending on your mpg.

If something is wrong it most likely the fuel sender unit. The fuel sender unit is the device that detects the fuel level, not the fuel pump.

Fuel tanks never truly fill, the top 30% can be entirely fuel vapor, so they have to estimate what a true full is during high evap times in the summer.

It's not a scientific measuring device, its a reference item.

Don't come on here asking for advice then say we are wrong when you have no clue yourself.

It is normal. I've had 3 Tacoma's all of which did/do that.

Don't tell OP what to do, it's his thread! ;)

Why follow anyone's advice? It's his truck and he KNOWS it is the gas gauge. You're just supposed to agree with OP and let him investigate a non-issue.

Its pretty common/normal to have the fuel gauge stay full for a while and then rapidly drop down to another level. Normal unless you convinced yourself the gas gauge or fuel pump is malfunctioning. If then spend the money and tell us if it got fixed.

I really wanted to post a sarcastic comment here but that's not really helpful. Mine has never moved before 50 mi and I have no intention of investigating anything. Not the first vehicle or make for that matter that I have had do it

    Yawn...
Sure is a great feeling when the needle stays up for that long. :)

Never paid attention to the number of miles before it starts dropping. I guess I'll be more conscious of it now, thanks to you guys...

OP, if it helps at all, I usually get to about 100 miles before the fuel gauge reads 3/4. I normally do a little topping off so I can get an even dollar amount.

Apparently there is a screen somewhere down the fill tube that causes the gas to back up and shut off the gas pump. I usually let the gas settle and can then add another 7 or 8 litres of gas to the tank and fill the tube (1 3/4 gallons).

I can run about 60 to 70 kms before the needle moves.

    Hmmm. Let's see...

    1. Fuel gauge read full. - No Problem!
    2. Truck still runs. - Again, No Problem!

Come back when you actually have a "problem".

I usually get 50-55 miles in before the gauge starts to move.

There is no screen, just a small overflow tube that is slowly letting you think the gas is "settling". You are just filling the charcoal canister when you add fuel after the pump shuts off.
