I found this Timmy the Toolman youtube video a good starting point for more info on doing this work

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdDhXZIs6Lo

"In this video, we show you how to replace a fuel filter on a 3rd Generation Toyota 4runner (1996-2002) with the 3.4 liter V6 engine. This repair would also be similar for 1st Generation Tacomas (1995-2004) with the 3.4 liter V6 engine. Even if you don't own a 4runner or Tacoma, the information we share and techniques we show could help you out with replacing a fuel filter on your particular vehicle as well.

If you have a 1st Gen Tacoma with the 3.4 liter V6 engine, the fuel filter is in the same spot on the Tacoma near the driver side frame rail under the driver seat. The electrical connection for the fuel pump on the tank however has to be accessed from under the vehicle. There's no secret hatch like there is on the 4runner. The fuel pump power disconnect is on the front of the fuel tank just like the 4runner. If you go under the truck in front of the gas tank fill pipe, look over the top of the driver side frame rail in front of the body mount and you'll see the power connection plug to the fuel pump. There's plenty of room to get your hand in the there and maybe you could depress the power plug with just your finger and be able to remove the plug. If it fights you, you could try a 90 degree bent nose needle nose pliers and that should work. From feeling up there with my hand, the tab on the plug you need to depress faces towards the passenger side of the truck. "

there are several other paragraphs as well

he says that Toyota doesn't have rec service interval and believes it to be a 'Lifetime Part' Must be why several of my local Toyota mechanics stopped this service decade or so ago

    Timmy begs to differ

now I will just need to translate this to an xtracab model (instead of the 4Runner in Video)

280k and mine has never been changed. If you're messing around in the area with other maintenance stuff then sure do it but I wouldn't make it a point to go out of the way to do it. Just my opinion, I know others don't feel the same way about the filter.

yes, it maybe one of those 'don't need to replace until other components down the line get funky' ... just a peace of mind rest easy at night no fretting Lol

too bad the filter doesn't look to be a see-thru type of enclosure to see exactly what is going on inside like the late '70s vehicles had on their fuel filters

You absolutely should change the filter every 100,000 at least

This is my filter at 90,000, I decided to cut it open to see and it’s black with dirt.
That filter should be white in color.

When I worked indy we called them every 100k

Now at a dealer we never call them, simply due to corrosion. If we strip the fuel line, either we pay for it, or the customer does. Neither are happy.

I never had a 3.4 fuel line strip but the 3.0's did 10 years ago, and now the 3.4's are 20+ year old.

Here is an easy youtube to replace it.
    It needs to be done.
    AND HINT,
make sure you remove the gas cap so the gas tank pressure doesn’t keep bleeding the gas out the filter lines

Be sure to point the truck with the front toward an incline instead of a decline. The first time I removed my filter, no problem because the front was pointed up the driveway.
On the second time, I had the front pointing down the driveway and a natural siphon started with the fuel line. So I had to quickly grab my floor jack and elevate the front to stop the siphoning from occurring. Granted this was with a nearly full tank of fuel. I guess if you do this with a low tank, it shouldn't be a problem.

it will be done on a lift now that I have found one to rent, not sure about incline on that but will come with near empty fuel tank

this is all about preventative maintenance, and PM is perhaps reason why my truck has been EXTREMELY low maintenance for 22yrs!
i sure hope those words don't bite me and become a huge nightmare in the years to come hahah

How many people run their Fram oil filters for 15,000 miles? Possible yes. Advised? Ummm - no comment.

Hey everyone, just yesterday I had to tow my truck home due to a non-start issue. Traced it back to the fuel system. Checked all the relays and fuses and now believe the problem is either the fuel filter or fuel pump. Would a clogged filter cause a no start issue? Trying to check/cross off the easiest parts possible before I rip the bed off to get to the fuel pump. '96 3.4l Manual. Thanks

Try the filter first it can never hurt .It does not hurt to make sure the injectors are firing like they should before pulling the bed off.

Mine gets changed at the longest every two years and coated in Never Seize .

Having to cut one out and replace Fuel lines got expensive The filter may be life time the lines and brackets sure are not in the world of spray liquid brine at every chance of Winter weather.

Thanks for the reply guys. If I do end up changing the pump, would it be worth it to put in a high pressure pump? I plan on adding a supercharger but not for a while.

The injectors don`t need the higher pressure can you get higher flow without increasing pressure ?

I have been away from Forced Induction to long to have these numbers in the fore front of my brain.
