I had both front lower control arms replaced with an immediate alignment done. Once all the work was done, this clunking noise started. It mainly happens when you initially change your direction (forward and backward) with a hard turn of the wheel to either side. It's getting progressively worse. Three mechanics have looked at it and cannot find anything noticeably wrong and suspect faulty parts. The only other thing they noticed was too much play in the cv axel, which I'm also going to replace but said it wouldn't cause the clunking noise. Anyone have any ideas before I buy more replacement parts? They are Duralast from Autozone (laugh... I brain dumped Rockauto and went with the quickest shipping company to an APO, overseas location... not my smartest move).

You can view a video I was able to get while backing up:

Did the bump stops get put back in the new lower control arms or when the control arms were installed did they torque them down when they had the full weight of the truck on them?

Do the outer tie rods have play in them. Or the inner tie rods

I'll ask the mechanic that installed them today or tomorrow.... I wasn't at the garage when the work was done :(

tie rods are all solid... no play. The only part that had any play was the left axel shaft

Don't mention the axle shaft to anyone, that play is normal, it will only confuse the situation.

How much play is too much? It's relatively more than the right side. I'll try and get a video of that once I have it on the lift today to torque the nuts and bolts just to make sure I don't end up wasting more money. Thanks everyone!

Just a shot in the dark, you sure they torqued the CV shaft outer nut? I think it's supposed to be something like 150ftlbs. It's hidden under the dust cap.

It's different for every truck. Basically if you replace the needle bearing with the ECGS bushing, the play will be minimalized. This is only for the driver side, passenger side doesn't have this issue.

Worked like a charm! They were about 15ft#'s off. I took a video of the play of the axel shaft. Compared both sides. I'll post that once I get it uploaded to youtube. Thanks for the info!!

So what did you torque those alignment cam bolts too because my truck is doing the same thing after immediately getting an alignment after replacing lower control arms

Great news finding this post and reply. Headed to Lake Powell in 2 days and this just started on my front end. Just aligned it a month ago. I have the same play in my brand new CVJ half shafts with ECG supply bushing and My wife’s 4Runner has the same play in it as well, so I don’t think there is an issue there at all. I do have a different clunk that I can feel and hear, but I believe after inspecting it today, that my lower control arm bushings are shot again. I will report back if that fixes the other “clunking” that I have had for 4-6 months. Great diagnosis @Texoma!! Thanks.
