Just bought a 99 4x4 xtracab with less than 160k mi. Seems to run great, and the frame has little rust, but there's some damage up front that just barely spared the radiator. I clearly have some work to do to fix the crossmember and skid plate, but I'm not sure from what I've found on here and the rest of the internet so far - what might be missing of the bumper structure. Are the frame ends just supposed to stick out like this, or is the bumper reinforcement part (i.e. rockauto TO1025104) supposed to attach across those ends (rather than, say, live up near the top of the bumper)? I'm not looking to replace with a custom offroading bumper at this time.

I hope you inspected the rear part of the frame prior to purchasing.

Those rail ends are replaceable reinforcements. They are what absorb impact after a hit and nothing else mounts to them.
That TO1025104 part number is for the upper bumper reinforcement it sits under the grille area under the plastic portion of the bumper.

I just worked on one a few weeks ago, replaced the whole front end, radiator support, those rail end absorbers and the middle crossbar on your first picture. If you need any pictures I can send you some tomorrow of my work computer.

Thanks, this is super helpful. Did you pull the rail end absorbers and middle crossbar from a scrapped donor, or are these available new somewhere (not expecting the middle crossbar to be, but doesn't hurt to ask I guess)?

You’d be surprised to hear that I got everything brand new from the dealer. Granted I had to wait for one of the absorbers for like 2 weeks since it was on back order I can get you part numbers if you’d like soon as soon as I get to work.

I am indeed surprised - I have yet to find the appropriate parts diagram. These numbers will be greatly appreciated!

Pat numbers for the absorbers are
    5111035020 for the right side
    5112035020 for the left side
5102160010 for the center cross bar

I called our local Toyota dealer and unfortunately they don’t have them in stock and the guy is checking if they can order them to see if they have any inventory in a warehouse. And here’s a picture of the diagram the green highlight is the center crossbar.

Thanks! The full part number for this that I found in the VZN170L-CRMDKAB parts list was 51021-35040, but the only online supplier with a diagram looks like the one for the 01+ assemblies. I can also only find the right hand rail ends, left hand is showing as discontinued, is this because they're actually the same part (and just have unique codes for manufacturing workflow)?

That part number you got is not applicable to a 99 the center cross bar number is the one I sent you as per my repair diagram. It’s called crossmember auxiliary it’s highlighted in blue with part number and it’s number 2 on that diagram

Thanks, I really appreciate your help with this. Still a little confused, though - the diagram in your screenshot doesn't match my 99, and shows the part as 5102160010. The diagram you posted earlier is the only frame diagram I've seen that does match my 99, and shows the part as 51021B, which matches the parts list I've found for the model (https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_199903_TOYOTA_TACOMA_VZN170L-CRMDKAB_5151.html), which specifies this is as 5102135040. But the only domestic online supplier I've found with 5102135040 in stock is showing the part drawing that you have for 5102160010.

Where you able to find both the left and right rail extensions (51110 and 51120) when you did this, or did you just use two of one that is available?

Ok now I'm seeing that 5102160010 is listed as a replacement for 5102135040 - am curious to know if you used 5102160010 and it looked like the same part, or if they mean for folks to substitute the welded crossmember with one that bolts on to the rail ends (what shows up in the drawings/diagrams appears to be that kind of part), like they did with the 01 frame update. Seems unlikely given the need to support the skid plate, but one can always dream. Looks like everything is in stock in Japan on megazip...

The 'bolt-in' variant is 01 and up as you can see here when I replaced mine; you can see the welded nuts that the skid plate attaches to

Yeah i called out parts dealer and he said it’s a superseded number so either would work. That’s why the number I gave you pushed you to the other nlber and vice versa. It’s the same exact part from what he told me.

as for the tail end absorbers they are side specific. I got one can’t remember which one shipped nex day but the other one did take 2 weeks to get from a warehouse back east.

Also that cross bar is welded on so only thing that’s bolted on are the absorbers.

I don't; mine was original to the truck.

Although I can look in another half hour or so about finding it online though someone else might do that before I get back.

2001 through 2004 are the same so you'll end up with the results you need.
