I grew up in Ohio, I would've advised you to do what you did before you even looked at it... They use MASSIVE amounts of salt on the roads in the winter... With this whole thing in mind, even if there wasn't a rust issue, this is exactly why you won't find me being one of the tards throwing care to the wind and taking my truck on the beach.

I wish someone with an 01-04 would chime in with any experiences they've had taking their truck in for this inspection.

To everyone who gave them parts to install, specifically shocks/leaf springs, did the dealer charge you to install them? I got my truck back and everything is great but they were going to charge me almost $200 for the use of their spring compressor. THANKS but NO THANKS!

    Pretty much stock
I installed the coils on the shocks myself, so no labor on that installation. For me, there will be minor labor charges for the u-joints, water pump, and valve cover gasket. Everything else is disassembled as they perform the work, so installation for the new part is free per my service manager. I order the wheel bearing hub assemblies because it was cheaper than having the garage press the bearings on and off.

If you're planning on doing it, you can rent spring compressors at auto parts stores. Literally took 10 minutes with the help of a buddy (and an impact wrench).

I am still waiting for my frame. I went in last week to ask if I bought an OME suspension lift, would they install. The service manger said absolutely, no charge

Subbed. Just got back from my dealer, team toyota in Glen mills, frame failed inspection, four month wait. They are covering the rental. Bummed that I'm losing my truck for four months, but kinda psyched to replace some parts and give my 212k mile 06 a new lease on life. I have an ome lift on it, I don't foresee any issue with them swapping it onto the new frame, since this same dealer put everything on for me last year. And now I wait.....

Mine went in Monday. They had a car rental company pick me up and take me back to their lot. Said they ( Toyota) were only covering a subcompact car. I said no. Ended up with a Kia Optima (Claimed Spring Break cleaned out their inventory). Returned it same day. Rental agency forbid me taking the car out of state and said I was liable for it even after I returned it to Toyota. Basically, until it was back on their lot, I am liable. Am doing without a loaner. I blame this on the local dealer. When I originally spoke with the service manager, he opined I would probably get a Camry. As I could be persuaded to buy a new car, I thought this would be a chance to test drive one. My next car will definitely NOT be bought at this dealer and I will never rent at Thrifty either.

Dropped it off Monday at 730 AM. Get a Call Wednesday 8AM that it is finished. Pulled engine/tranny as unit and did not have to do AC or coolant.

I was told early last week my frame was in but it would be a 4 week wait on wiring harness. Then Fri I got a call that they were in middle of doing replacement and found some other issues. One of which is the tranny mount. Seems like that would be covered.
Also, service manger said wiring harness does not need replaced?

Sorry for lack of update. Truck went back a few weeks ago, tires were not balanced apperently. What ever they did the 40+ mph wobble is gone. However their solution to fix my tool box not opening and the bed being crooked was to move the tool box towards the tail gate till it opened correctly.

The bed is still crooked. I'll be writing corporate asap to see what can be done to resolve the issue.

I have an appointment for a frame inspection for May 11th. My truck is an 08. NY winters with only 56k miles. Before I take it in, I am going to put it up on my buddies lift to check it thoroughly. If I see no rust through, I will likely wait through another winter since this recall is good into early 2016.

If they undercoat, and do not replace the frame, I was told that there would be a 10 year warranty extension on the frame. That is ten years from the original period of 3 years, so it would take me to 2021.

I was also told that 75% of the 2nd gens coming in are getting frames replaced.

Mine is an 06 with 100k. Pa driving. They had it for 3 hours and then called to tell me I needed a new frame. If they pass on it, I would wait, because I'm guessing it'll just be a matter of time. Good luck either way!

Just had my 06 Taco in for the frame inspection last week. They got me in the day I called and only had it 20 minutes before they gave me the long face. 9 Pennsylvania winters = frame failure. This truck was rustproofed when new, so I was surprised. The good news is that the body is perfect with regard to being rust free. I want to do my own visual next week on my days off to see the extent of the rust.

Fortunately the dealer I went to said the truck was safe to drive and would pose no danger in using it. I was told the replacement would include brake lines, lower control arms and new leafs. Didn't have to sign any waivers to remove the truck from the dealer. I was informed the wait time is about 4 months.

That said, I'm actually pleased Toyota is replacing my frame. 9 years and 130k miles and still running strong. I would never have had this experience with previous Ford products I owned (Ford only stands behind their products so that you can't get a clear shot at them). I'm actually quite surprised they aren't making a cash settlement offer since the cost of the frame replacement in my case probably exceeds the value of the truck.

I asked about the possibility of getting a buy out from Toyota and they said they were only doing that with models around 2000 and below. Not that I would trade mine in at this point. I am excited about the new frame and parts and putting an OME suspension lift on when they do the switch. Can't wait!

    Good luck with yours!

I called my dealership that has my truck to ask as to what they were doing while my truck sits in their lot. My concern was that the battery dies, gas gums up, etc. He assured me that they are starting and running it on a regular bases. I'm sure others have thought of this, but just passing it on.

Question.... my co worker has his '05 quarantined at the dealer for a month already (went in for the leafspring recall and found the frame issue while there) and said it's looking like another two-three months. He uses his truck a lot for moving lumber/trees and was lamenting about being stuck with a Corolla.

I said, if this was a safety related matter where the mfr said your vehicle is unsafe, shouldn't you be in a similar vehicle they are keeping you out of (by them retaining his truck) and not a corolla?

At what point does this become a much bigger problem for Toyota? What would it take to get him in a truck due to the dealer essentially saying "you can't drive it out of here" (since we've had one heck of a winter and snow is almost gone and he's got trees and stuff to clear).

    Thoughts?

My dealer went through enterprise to get me a dodge ram 1500 until a 4 runner becomes available. Toyota was to to do whatever necessary to keep us from driving the truck off the lot, which in this case was getting me a dodge

It sounds like each dealer gives different responses. I got a camry for a loaner. I don't "need" my truck for work. He did tell me that if I needed to have a truck, they would get me one through a regular rental company. I would push the issue with them and press them that you need a truck for work. It's their issue. Good luck!
