    Hello all

Unfortunately I live in the rust belt, so there’s some rust on the frame. Most of the rusts are surface and along the seams of the frame.

So I wirebrushed the frame and treat them to rust treatment. In the meantime, do I just paint the Por-15 on the rust areas? Or should I do the whole frame?

These frames (most frames, really) rust from the inside out. So if you have rust on the outside, you can almost guarantee the rust on the inside is worse (since it just sits in there and doesn't get rinsed off).

If you can get a fiberoptic camera and try to inspect as much of it as you can.

Not living in a rust belt state, I don't have any personal experience with rust, but from what I have seen, POR-15 is extremely popular. There have been many threads on the subject. I'd search around and see what other people are doing with it.

    I’m in Columbus, Ohio.
As far as por-15, I’m not set on it either. I picked it because it’s readily available locally. Another product that’s I’m loving at is Eastwood rust encapsulater

POR-15 is by far the product I see getting tossed around in the frame rust threads the most.

Just my opinion here; POR has never worked acceptably for me. always flakes off. Much better with Rust Bullet paint. I painted my entire frame and spent 4 cans or so of eastwood green internal frame coating before exposing my TRD to new england winter.

Of course Fluid filmed the crap out of it once the paint cured/dried.......

i am looking at Eastwood too, my local bodyshop guy that did paintwork on my hood told me the POR-15 starts peeling after awhile and have to redo it often (not sure how often though)

@CS_AR did some nice looking work on his frame and put a lot of effort into it, i wish to model my de-weathering project after his if possible

is that because it is the cheapest? (lowest cost) or do you know?

I am not exactly sure, but my assumption is that it works well. It doesn't seam like people who are worried about their frame rusting in half would tend to cheap out on preventative actions.

I hear fluid film tossed around quite a bit too.

POR-15 is great as long as you follow the right steps which is where most people fail. I have it on a set of rock sliders and while the bedliner has been worn away the POR-15 is still holding strong.

My POR has started to flake around the sharp corners of my frame... And that is after following the instructions, I painted it on in a fairly controlled environment. I think POR is definitely suited for well scuffed metal, but anything thats even close to new will need segnificant sanding for it to adhere.

I used it on my rocksliders when new as well, treated them with the etching solution as well... Still flaked after 2 years.

I'm convinced I'll need to stay vigilant with a good spray paint and fluid film every season to keep the rust at Bay.

Never used POR-15 but did my 2001 dodge a few years ago with Rust Bullet. Two good coats on the frame after cleaning up and then did spray on Rustoleum Bed liner to turn back to black(silver color but read the silver has more metal in it vs the black they sell). It held up great for 4 years living in PA/NY/CT driving in the winter with salt/calcium spray. I also used/use Fluid Film on all my vehicles annually. Bought my 2003 Jetta TDI in 2014 from up-state Vermont. Seller also used fluid film and the underneath is spotless. I was sold on Fluid Film.

I am testing a product named Rust-Oleum Farm Implement Paint to treat some surface rust from gravel rash and mud around the wheels. My truck spent its life in the Tyler TX area. I doubt it has ever seen a salted road.

So this is a test case for using Farm Implement Paint to repair surface rust and see if it really helps to resist chips from gravel and rocks.

I wanted to try Farm Implement paint because:

    1) Tractors and Farm Implements usually have a rough life in the field. They are often left outside.
    2) The paint goes on thick and is supposed to be chip resistant. It's easy to spray.
    3) Farm Implements are exposed to strong chemicals like RoundUp, various herbicides, and fertilizers. While no road salt is in a field, its not a chemical-free environment.
    4) I can get it from my local Tractor Supply Center store.

We should see how this goes on my truck for chip resistance before someone in an area with road salt uses it.

This paint takes a long time to dry compared to other paints. That may explain the chip resistance properties.

    Here are some pictures.

From the Inside Looking Out - This part has not been treated. I'm really torn about trying to paint this. I'm thinking about only using Fluid Film on the inside.

The biggest problem that I can find on the inside is a couple of little chips around this joint.

    Treatment

To remove the surface rust, I sandblasted the area to remove any flaking paint and rust. Sandblasting cleaned it up.

Next, I primed it with Rust-Oleum Self Etching Primer.

Followed by two coats of Farm Implement Paint.

How did the farm implement paint hold up after a couple of years?

Still holding. I used it on my 100 series last summer after removing a cancerous growth. Cleaning and priming are the keys.
