The day after I bought my used 13 Tacoma, I went to a locksmith to have a duplicate key/fob made. The guy found a tracking device somewhere up under the steering column and he said it was probably from the car dealership. We tossed it.

    Most likely a dedicated timer.

EM78P153EN is an odd one-time programmable processor. We called those burn and crash. The Oscillator is a common watch crystal (low frequency, hence low power).

The company is still around ELAN Microelectronics (Taiwan).

I'm a dinosaur, but get pulled in to help companies make new products when they can not buy the old chips anymore. I keep telling everyone that's it, I'm a dinosaur and need to go roam the earth!

Look at the PCB Loop near R600E. The adjustable cap would be used for fine-tuning loop frequency. Each processor with a customer ID code.

Valet Parking system? Fob attached to customers keys, when you return Valet punches in a code to spot the customers keys? A fully automated system would also print the per hour charges for parking, tip not included.

It's really a top-secret NSA tracking, video conferencing device but disguised as an old key fob. ha.

One of my early "prank" devices was a USB Jitterbug, similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Programmable-Jiggler-50-Settings-Makes-Hacked-Randomly-Gibberish

I had a fellow engineer who made super small "click the box" screens for computer programs. I explained it was hard to click when your hand wasn't steady (I have tremors so clicking a small box is near impossible). He did software, I did hardware. So one morning his mouse started acting up. He got another one, the same thing, the third one, the same thing. The computer was possessed with the shaky mouse! He started making much larger "click here" boxes.

The irony is when windows updated for power savings, it would save power by shutting down USB ports. Uh oh, you woke windows up by moving the mouse! If you have a PS2 mouse, all was good. USB Keyboard & Mouse the computer wouldn't resume. The old "shake the mouse" had a real-world use to keep the computer from going to sleep. https://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Computer-Simulate-Movement-Prevents/dp/B08TQQJVJ5

For anyone with Essential Tremors or Parkinson's, "Steady Mouse" is a cool program. Programmer's grandfather had Parkinson's, so he wrote it to help out his granddad. Free for WinXP but Win10 took some major work so he charges a small fee. https://www.steadymouse.com/about/

Yeah i think thats it. YEsterday-me was thinking maybe they stuck it on an inner layer of the PCB but that makes more sense.

I googled around on that R600E number, didn't find much.

Clearly the NSA has planted this black plastic box with a red flashy light to track your movements. Much secret, very covert.

Why was it mounted up under the seat? Probably the same reason I wrote "help me" on the inside of the bathroom wall before I put up new drywall.

Oh lord, this guy cracks me up.

Tracking device? Wife checking on him?

    Forehead slap.

Let me solve this mystery. It's a starter lock out proximity fob. Was quite the thing back in 2003.

Guess I could go on about the "stinky truck" 4x4 that was (gasp) off roaded and dusty, smelly, and such (I mean really, who off roads a 4x4 trail rig?)...but I've had enough laughs for the night after finding this jewel. Although the comedy of someone "washing" the AC control panel and shorting it out certainly gained a chuckle or two.

Perhaps the guy who owned it before had it stolen after 4 months and less than 1k miles of ownership, found it 3 weeks later stripped of white faced gauges and 4wd computer and components because some pre-runner poser didn't want to spend honest $$$ on a 4x4 or obtain one by the traditional, legal means, and original owner decided to add a starter lockout, and hid the spare behind the back seat where it could be gotten to with a phillips screw driver somewhat easily in the event his primary fob failed, but a place that would not be discovered by a thief.

    Solid work @jbrandt ! :D

I'm guessing the silent alarm antenna for the pager alarm hidden under the driver side A-pillar cover really fucked his head up. Some serious next level secret squirrel .gov monitoring shit going on there...

The condoms under the carpet thread and stinky off road truck threads I'll have to think about. I mean, there must have been some magic previous owner did to make the truck not "stink" on the test drive, only to release the odor of thousands of miles of accumulated off roading dust and dirt after new buyer got 10 miles away. o_O:smack:

Perhaps a Ridgeline would be an appropriate replacement?

Um. Dude. LOL this whole thread was just a joke really. But ok.
Why so much sarcasm? Not happy with your taco ?
Also what's wrong with a Ridgeline ? Nice city truck and I own one as well.
My tacoma is for me. You spent so much time typing up this response, are you the previous owner or something ?

Anyways, have a great day ?
