Hope everyone is staying safe and sane during these times:

    Long story short:

I've owned this truck for years. The frame recall was done prior to purchase.

Heard an odd *clunk* and the saw this.

The crack is on the passenger side just ahead of the rear wheel as the frame arches up over the axle.

Question:. Can this be welded safely?

It would really depend on who is doing the welding.

To me all in a days work.

All though once you start most likely your going to find more areas that will need attention!!

If your paying normal shop rates it could get expensive.

Have friend who is a legit welder by trade. Wasn't sure if it's something safe or not to do.

    Longer version:

About 6 months ago I was travelling at about 60mph on the highway. A vehicle came up behind me at a high rate of speed. Hit me in the rear, I kept it straight. Vehicle took to the shoulder, passed another 3 cars and was gone. Gonna assume drunk.

Thinking this hit is what started this crack.

I'd be concerned with what you'd find underneath. Probably pretty corroded. If it were mine I'd pull the bed and consider rebuilding the back half of the frame on that side with new steel. Looks like a lot of that old for needs to go before you find something to weld to.

Yes. Like I said, about 6 months ago.

Thanks for the links and advice. I'll check this site out closely. It's definitely in the section marked in red above. I'm not driving it as of a few hours ago when I noticed this. That's for sure. :)

    Ouch...

I'd look into the SafeTCap offerings but definitely look over that frame carefully because if it got bad enough there to crack, it's gotta be pretty bad in other parts too. Plus these frames rot from the inside out, so as bad as it looks on the outside it's gonna be worse inside.

So this is the 2nd frame this truck has had?

If it were mine, I would weld it up. I would be doing my own welding though. I’m not sure how much it will cost to have done but it’s pretty straight forward.

ah, yes I see the longer version now.

Another vote for capping. I have a feeling that's going to blow apart with so much heat concentrated in that small an area.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep ya updated. My wife is a kidney transplant recipient and I donated a kidney a few years ago to my sister in law so with social distancing, my baby will have to sit a bit until I can get out and welded up.

Stay safe and positive everyone! You rock.

Shit, I wish I still had my mobile welding setup. I’d just come give you a hand. Stay well, best wishes!
