would something like that potentially make a big popping sound when you are backing up and turning? every time i back up and turn the wheels to the left, my passenger side makes a big pop sound that i can feel through the seat and steering wheel. can't determine if it's a cv, wheel bearing, or lower pall joint. it only makes the sound once per back up.

 

We had a 4runner a couple weeks ago with the same symptom, ended up being his lower control arm mounting bolts werent tight enough, someone had done an alignment and didnt tighten them back up, i have also seen a certain local members upper control arm mounting bolt (R/F) was loose and caused a similar noise. Might want to check all control arm mounting bolts L & R, let me know if you find anything.

 

i actually tightened them a couple weeks ago to eliminate that from the equation......no change

edit: tightened upper and lower control arm bolts (i'v had the uppers come loose on me while wheeling before). retorqued the uca ball joint nut. tightened the cab mount. checked upper and lower shock mounts. replaced outer tie rod ends and had an alignment (lca bolts were checked post alignment). rechecked the tie rod lock nuts. i also tightened the two big bolts that hold the ball joint to the spindle, along with the brake caliper mounting hardware. so pretty much all there is left i can think of is cv, wheel bearing, and lca ball joint......

 

Upper and lower?

Another option, i saw a post that one of our guys linked from here about a guy having a clunk and it ended up being his body mounts, you might try tightening up those as well. And double check your trans mount bolts. If not one of those, not sure without hearing it, could also be the shifting of directions from the drive shaft.

These are all guesses of course, but kinda the things i would probably look at first if your truck was here.

 

yeah, upper and lower. check the edit i made, it has all of the stuff i've tightened. i'll check the trans mount bolts, but you can hear and feel it coming from the far right side of the vehicle, so i doubt it will be that

 

Yeah, you're probably right, i didnt notice the turning part of the issue, sure wish you lived closer, i would help take a look at that sucker for you, really helpful when you can put it up on the lift.

 

yeah, but that would be all too convenient i'll see if i can attach the go-pro somewhere in there and get a sound clip for ya.

i can get the whole front off of the ground no problem. i doubt i would be able to feel a bad wheel bearing by spinning the tire by hand correct?

 

It wouldnt be felt by spinning (although i have felt some like that but rare) but more by getting the wheel off the ground and then try to move the wheel in and out or up and down by holding the top and bottom of the wheel and see if there is excess movement. This is a good idea of what i am talking about, putting it into words isnt always the best:

Hey k9, what kind are they? If you do decide to get rid of them I may be interested if they are bolt on...(I've been meaning to order a set to spare me dings in this stupid tight work parking lot, but have been putting it off)...

 

Not sure the full stats, but i do know they are weld on.

 

thanks jason. i figured that was gonna be how to test it. i'll give it a shot. just not sure if i'll have enout play or be able to apply enough force to move it. we shall see.

gregg, since they are weld on, why not just cut the legs down so they sit narrower?

 

They are weld on or bolt on. I do not have the bolt on hardware. You can get that from beefed if you really wanted too.

 

So im pretty sure I passed Jason (lawn care) on A1A today...we shall see if I was correct.

You are correct. Your pic inspired me to head up that way and eat at the Marina Restaurant in downtown Fernandina. I like that ride and usually stop in Amelia Island SP and drive around the beach.
