I bit the bullet on REIs sale and got a Flated topper (<< click this link to see it) for a small overland (sleep in the 6ft bed) trip from Oregon to CA. Here’s why I purchase it for my 3rd gen.

    1) I liked how I could strap a board or two to the top (Soft topper did not approve of this).

    2) Storage and ease of install / removal by myself. Larger headspace too

    3) Shipped to REI totaled $1,430 alongside a member kick back of 10%. So with the 20% sale a net cost of ~$1,200 for a quick overland topper solution.

Please define 'overland' for your trip.

There's not many places in the US this can happen, so I'm really curious.

Uhh…freedom to drive to a bush and pee on it without paying $30 to also hear generators? Lol. Does that help?

I know! I saw this. But I don’t live in a wet climate. Little bit of planning goes a long way. Also, nothing is 100% completely sealed on a shell either.

Edit: that is a 1st Gen. They should have remedied some “flaps” issue going on but I do plan to temporarily plug something in the corners near the cab.

I can do that on my back porch, which overlooks a golf course.

Enjoy your trip, don't splash your Reeboks. :D

    Hey OP,
Curious how the flared topper has been working for you?

From the video: "Yeah, things are getting pretty wet back here."

Wonder if OP has returned it to REI yet?

REI does have a good return policy. They just might take it. I don't know if it's Costco good, but pretty good.

The only thing I see as a bonus to other light weight toppers is you can strap stuff to the top of it. It doesn’t look great otherWise

I thought those “shells” were parody…………………until i saw a F150 in Anza Borrego with one, my immediate thought was “why not buy the real thing?” OP- how do they attach to the bed?

6 straps, 1 hook at each corner attached to the stock hooks in the corners of the bed and 2 on either side in the middle, they come with a couple J hooks, I've seen the J hooks attached to the bed rails with the stock plastic sliding mounts, looked like it was secure.

I've been looking at this, just got my Taco last month. These are 1/2 the price of "normal" shells and caps and are a lot easier to deal with if you don't need the on the truck. deflate and put in the garage, not much space needed.
