Does anyone have any experience and/or info flat towing their Tacoma’s? I’m in the market for an RV for work. Looking into both class C’s and Class A’s with either diesel or the triton V10 drivetrains. Any info on them would be much appreciated as well.

Article below says not to flat tow many Toyota trucks ( not specifically Tacoma’s ) and was wondering why and if I’d be ok as my truck is a manual.

    thanks!

You need a driveshaft disconnect even with a manual trans. The bearings need lube even in the neutral position. Do a search and there’s more info on it. I’m going through this now, adding a disconnect to the driveline.
Also make sure the RV you buy can tow at least 5000 lbs, some only tow 3500 lbs max.

that is actually wrong. the front does not require a "pump" as it's an enclosed differential. The front driveshaft from the transfer case does NOT spin unless put into 4wd (at least on my '04 ADD/push-button). the front wheels continuously turn regardless of 2wd or 4wd

ok, so the diff being locked to the front right CV operates a pump to lube?

my other point still holds true tho. OP also has an '04 just manual trans. even with J-shift, the actuator has to tell the front DS to engage otherwise it spins free, so no worries

I flat tow my truck all the time. I have made a 600 mile trip every year for the last 12 years. Plus miscellaneous other trips, for a total of probably close to 10,000 miles, all flat towed. Never had a problem. I put the transmission in neutral, the transfer case in 2 hi and turn the key to unlock the steering wheel.

Transfer case in 2wd and disconnect the rear drive shaft is all you have to do.

If you have a manual transmission you don't have to disconnect the drive shaft.

Driveline disconnect is the way to go. Mine has been towed 25000 miles.

Manual or automatic transmission? I have flat towed mine close to 10,000 miles without a driveline disconnect. Just put it in neutral and unlock the steering wheel.

Many newer class-C's come with a 7500 pound hitch - although you'll want to independently verify you're under all the weight limits. Class A's have 15 more HP but tend to weight significantly more so you'll be going slower if that matters.

Although flat towing isn't recommended there's no technical reason a 1st gen manual transmission taco can't be flat towed and scores of people have logged significant miles with no issues. Often times the market is small enough that car makers don't want to do the testing to officially allow it.

Thanks for all your info and help guys. I’ll plan on doing a driveshaft disconnect then. Looks like superior driveshafts makes one specifically for my truck.

    thanks again!

Mine is a manual trans. Does that mean I don’t need the disconnect? The owners manual says I do/not to flat tow..

Be ready for spending some coin. The set up on my truck was 5k. disconnect, diodes/lighting/baseplate/tow bar/brake buddy. luckily the PO spent the money. My truck weighs 3600 and I tow it with my old 28' class a chevy 454. I tow it as empty as possible. If you want more opinions on what to buy, PM me. Start with a budget.

All I can say is I don't have one and I have flat towed it for a total of close to 10,000 miles over the course of 12 years, and never had a problem. I'd think if it was going to cause some sort of problem it would have by now.
