    11-14 update
Got it patch plugged and it's good to go now

Woke up and found a nail in my tire. I removed the nail and plugged it, but wondering if it's safe to drive on? Or what I can do?

My concern is it's between the tread. This is my first nail in an AT tire so idk

Should be ok to drive on, but you should get a tire shop to put a patch in it asap. Between the tread doesn't matter, its sidewall damage that can't really be fixed.

Most tire shops would probably pass on that patch as it is “too close to the sidewall” I call BS. I had a nail in the same spot on a fairly new tire, got the spiel from tire shop, decided I wasn’t about to throw away a $150 tire and plugged it myself. I got about 45k miles out of it before buying new ones.

They’re not supposed to patch holes in the outer tread ring or sidewall , only the inner tread rings. But you can ask. Might have to just plug it and keep an eye on it unless you can dismount the tire yourself.

I will say having it patched should be no problem. You may want to seek out a real tire shop not just a tire install shop (most national tire chain stores). Look toward shops that service commercial vehicles. Does not have to be Semis but just larger than your passenger vehicles.

Thanks all for your input. I'll see about getting a patch! Fortunately i have an identical spare that I rotate in and I'll use it for now.

I would trust that plug till the tread wears out.

Costco Tire also plugs tires. Very helpful, with no squawks about the aftermarket TPMS sensors preprogrammed and purchased from an eBay store when they did a winter tire swap, 8 wheels/4 tires from steel to Gen3 offroad alloy wheels (factory takeoffs, and a fifth was mounted later).

Technically it can be repaired, but most tire shops are not equipped to do it. It's known as a section repair as opposed to the more common puncture repair. Raw rubber is applied to the cleaned out void and cured under heat and pressure in a retread chamber; along with a reinforced patch on the inside.

I work fast, what I do is put a bigger nail in with caulking.

    Your options are:
    1: leave the plug
2: find a local family owned shop and have them patch it, bigger chain owned shops won't do it for insurance reasons
3: buy a patch kit, have a tire shop remove the tire, patch it yourself and have them install it back

If I was you I'd go with option 1. I had that exact tire on my 08 tacoma and i lived near a scrap yard so within a year i had like 2 plugs on the passenger front tire. The tire held fine until the end of it's life. It took the abuse of off roading with 0 leaks

rotate the cooper to the spare. I would not trust it.

I had similar screw in my coopers and discount replaced no hassle.
