No major modifications yet. Looking for suggestions.
Greetings, I recently acquired an 07 X-Runner from a friend I served with overseas for basically nothing. The only thing I had to do to drive it home was a new battery, windshield wipers, and windshield. Otherwise, it had 125K on the speedometer and great interior with virtually no flaws. However, the exterior is in pretty rough shape with rust on the roof and hood. I just had the drive shaft rebuilt to fix some issues with it being a little shaky. I'm looking to give it a complete overhaul.. paint, wheels, lift, performance, etc. Its not 4x4 so I'm thinking about building a hybrid overland without trying to make it "look" like an off-road vehicle when I live in the middle of a city and never go trailing. So far, i have about $750 in the truck including the purchase price. I have set a budget of around $3500 initially, primarily set aside for paint, front end, performance upgrades and a few cosmetic mods. This is my first Toyota project and would highly value some good advice on where I should start as cheap as possible.. DIY savvy so I could probably cut some labor costs there. Thanks in advance for any leads.

Goddamn you stole that thing, nice find.

The X-Runners are not built on the 4x4 chassis like the 2wd Prerunners are, x-runners are built on the same chassis as the 5lug 2wd Tacomas. With some other differences I think street performance-wise. You'll have a difficult time lifting it I imagine...most lift kits for Tacomas are for Prerunners and 4x4s (won't work on the X-runners).

Personally, X-Runners are pretty rare nowadays...Toyota didn't make a lot of them compared to the other models. I would keep it stock and clean it up/refresh it to look new again. Welcome to TW

I agree with @eon_blue. The X-Runners are meant to be lowered and “sporty”. But by all means it’s your truck! Not to mention the smoking deal you got!

Also yes, the X-Runner would be sick with a Supercharger bolted on.

    Happy Modding!

Your budget won't fully paint the truck correctly, not to mention the other items you list, or a few $k for an SC.

And do you realize that what you have is a bit on the rarer side? Not exotic, but not common either.

X Runners are a niche class street truck and as mentioned, on a 5 lug chassis.

I'd recommend leaving it as designed, making it mechanically solid / reliable and drive it a while as is. You might find you like it a lot and then spring for paint and an SC should you decide it's a long term keeper.

If you want to off road, do it with something else.

Yes, it's your truck, and you can hack it up if you wish. Just suggesting you fully understand what you have before stepping off that ledge.

@tcBob might have some thoughts on this too. :D

I have decided to go a different route with this thanks to the feedback and personal research I have done. Thanks for the responses. I will probably shift this to the x runners section to continue some discussions. Thank you!
