Lets see...grill shutter malfunction, Check engine, system malfunction....Looks like 293 miles on it.

First year vehicle problems? The last one looks like it might be an issue with TSS. Screenshot 2024-02-13 211329.png

I thought grill shutter malfunctions only happen to hybrids.

Welp, I just went outside and popped my hood for the first time. I does indeed have a shutter mechanism in front of the radiator. Oh joy!

I hate those grill shutters and the remote air dam deployment on 3rd gen tundras. I have had a 22 and now a 23 tundra. My 23 tundra doesn’t have the RAD but does have AGS’s. I was hoping they would do the AGS on the taco but oh well. At least they still did a manual air dam so can be removed without a bypass like needed on a tundra. Side note the tubdra trd pro doesn’t have an air dam or AGS so maybe trailhunter and pro taco’s won’t either.

IDK everything I've read here tells me that this is a trash GM product not a Toyota pictured. Toyota vehicles don't have CEL's or anything bad, like ever.

Auto shutter thing is another failure point that will fail eventually. Off roading dirt mud can get into the mechanisms, cold icey conditions as well. Its unnecessary to get .001 more mpg out of the vehicle.

This reminds me of the auto-retracting running boards. I see these things stuck open all the time on Ford F150's.

I tried to tell people all about my experiences with the 3rd Gen tundra ( have had a 22 and 23 ) after owning 7 Tacomas in a row. The active air dam was a hassle, the active grill shutters, auto start stop ( appears to not be on many models of the Tacoma thank god ) and even the vents on the tundra vs 3rd gen Tacoma.

these new trucks have a ton of quirky things.

It would be nice to 'code' the active shutter thing out. Or put a resister in the plug when it fails so it does not throw a code. Its unnecessary to spend money on the active shutter when warranty ends. Disable and remove and be done with it.

Here is how they work on the Tundra and should be the same on the 4th gen taco.

    OUTLINE

    (a) A grille shutter system is used. This system blocks the flow of air into the engine compartment from the upper radiator grille.
    (b) The grille shutter suitably controls cooling airflow for the engine by opening and closing the shutter, reducing drag.
    (c) The grille shutter system is composed of a swing grille actuator assembly, radiator shutter assembly and ECM.
    (d) The grille shutter system is controlled by the swing grille actuator assembly. The swing grille actuator assembly is integrated into the radiator shutter sub-assembly.

    MAIN FEATURES

    (a) The adoption of the grille shutter system has the following advantages.
    • Reduces the air resistance in the engine compartment when the vehicle is traveling at high speeds.
    • Facilitates warm-up of the engine by blocking the flow of cold air into the engine compartment when the engine coolant temperature is low. This supports fuel economy.
    FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Swing Grille Actuator Assembly
    • Actuates the radiator shutter sub-assembly based on the signal from the air conditioning amplifier assembly and ECM.
    • Sends a diagnosis signal to the combination meter assembly when a malfunction is detected.
    Radiator Shutter Sub-assembly

The fins of the radiator shutter sub-assembly are closed by the swing grille actuator assembly to block the airflow to the engine compartment.

    ECM
Sends an engine coolant temperature signal to the swing grille actuator assembly via CAN communication.

    Air Conditioning Amplifier Assembly
Sends the A/C refrigerant pressure and outside temperature to the ECM via CAN communication.

    OPERATION
    (a) The swing grille actuator assembly performs cold condition control while the engine coolant temperature is low.
    (b) The swing grille actuator assembly performs high speed traveling control.

    Cold Condition Control
    • When the ignition switch is ON at the engine coolant temperature is below 40°C (104°F), the grille shutter is closed until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F).
    • Using the air conditioner with low outside temperature, the grille shutter is opened when the pressure of the refrigerant becomes higher.
    High Speed Traveling Control
    • When the vehicle traveling speed is between approximately 60 to 150 km/h (37 to 93 mph), the grille shutter is closed.
    • When the vehicle is traveling and engine coolant temperature is approximately 97°C (207°F) or more, the grille shutter is opened.
    • When the vehicle is traveling and outside temperature is approximately 35°C (95°F) or more, the grille shutter is opened.
    • When the vehicle is traveling and air conditioning refrigerant pressure is high, the grille shutter opens and closes in accordance with the vehicle speed and the outside air temperature, etc.
HINT: Sometimes, the grille shutter operates after the ignition switch turned to ON or Off. This does not indicate a malfunction.

    FUNCTION
    (a) Warning Indication
    (1) The combination meter assembly uses the multi-information display and buzzer to provide the driver with grille shutter system malfunction information.

    DIAGNOSIS
    (a) If the ECM detects a malfunction in the grille shutter system, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in the ECM.
    (1) The DTCs can be read by connecting the Global TechStream (GTS) to the DLC3. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.

Funny enough I saw a video where a pebble was enough to throw a code on another Toyota. It’s gonna be interesting to see if this becomes a common issue because of off-roading debris

Which to me is the dumbest thing ever. Why they chose to not put grill shutters on the Tundra TRD PRO but has them on the offroad. They should have omitted grill shutters on the TRD PRO, Off Road and Trailhunter. I have not confirmed yet though if they are omitted on the TACOMA TRD PRO or TACOMA TH yet.

Loving my “manual shutter system”. Extremely reliable!
