First oil change at 1,700 miles.

Quite a large amount of tiny metal shavings in the pan and also some captured within the filter element. Pictures are below.

The assumption is this is normal and that such shavings are too small to cause damage.

If you have pictures of your first oil change to compare would be awesome to share.

It's why they call it "break" in...

No Pictures. I do care about maintenance on my Tacoma that I purchased brand new. I would like to get the most out of her by making sure the oil is changed regularly. I changed mine at 1,000 miles. I'm confident that there may have been some break-in material in the oil but take comfort that I regularly change the oil and don't really worry about that level of detail.

Also, after the manufactures initial suggested break-in period I drive it without concern. Including high RPM's when needed.

Keep your truck maintained and go out and enjoy it.

    Working now a list
I always do multiple break in oil and filter changes, usually find metal in the filter.

    Same with rear diff.

Thanks for the corroboration. Curious why so many tiny pieces would be in the pan if the oil is being filtered ? Would these just linger at the bottom of the pan?

Cause they are on the bottom of the pan and the strainer seat just above of the lower point?
This may help you to understand the engine lube system

I guess Toyota's engine manufacturing plant didn't clean that one too well before assembly. Idk, what the first 2 toyotacare oil changes were like for my truck, but the 1st one I did, the oil, and filter were spotless.
