first, firestone regularly lies and replaces perfectly good parts to charge high bills because that's the ONLY way the mechanics get paid there.

there is a "chance" they are being honest but I highly doubt it since they are telling you that you need the entire front end replaced since all it has is the rack and tie rods to it

go somewhere else and I can almost 100% guarantee you that all it needs to get fixed and aligned is one tie rod or something and its fixed out the door for under $200

    Reserected from the dead.
Your rack has inner and outer tie rod connectors. Firestone is assuming the rack is bad, not knowing the inner connectors are needed replaced.

Pull the accordian boots back and you will see the inner tie rod connectors.

I doubt the rack is bad.

About a $150 to change all the tie rod connectors. $600 for a new rack.

Check things closely before throwing money.

It might just be the bushings that mount the rack grab the rack and see if it moves easily

Firestone sucks. They told me I needed a center link kit for a car I once had. I told them I would take care of it. I went to get the parts and was told there was no such thing. The center link is solid steel and didn't wear. Bottom line, they were going to charge me for parts and labor and do nothing...

Well do you need to keep adding Fluid to the Power Steering like once a week or more often??

    Big puddle under the truck??

Under carriage coated with fluid from said leak.

It is a shame shops try to sell things that are just fine

When I lived in CA, the Firestone I went to was awesome. Hooked me up all of the time.

Moved here, and tried them out. At first, they were cool. Then after their remodel of the shop, they were trying to get me for a bunch of services that I didn't need. So I stopped going.

Now, I stick to two local shops that are owned and ran by honest and hard working guys.

Not as sure about tie rod ends, but I often believe that things like that should always be replaced in pairs, like radiator hoses and the like. If one is worn out, the other isn't far behind...just check them all very closely, and if in doubt, replace. Better to be safe then sorry!

How many miles on your truck?

Not trying to make u spend more money, but if you already there, would be good to replace ball joints (both) before alignment. If they are still original ,it would be a good idea to replace them all together.
    Check steering rack bushing too.

My only experience with Firestone was BAD....VERY BAD. If you do need advice I'd check around for a couple Tacoma World experienced mechanics and buy them lunch.

Firestone and PepBoys are the worst out there. PepBoys wanted to charge me 400.00 to cleanup my rodeo EGR valve. It took me 30 minutes to do it myself.
