Hey all. New member here and have gotten a lot of good info so far. First off, I'm currently trying to decide whether I really need a 4x4. I've already read a few threads on this question, but figure I'd ask since I'll be using my tacoma a bit differently. I'm in texas, and plan on only taking the tacoma off roading for camping and such but I really don't think I'll be anywhere that's meant only for serious off roading. Anyway, a 4x2 TRD could handle most off roading, correct? Like camping areas and such.

Next question - my parents are paying the insurance, and they do not want to be paying mmore than what they paid for on my 2011 genesis 2.0t coupe. Will either a 4x2 TRD or a 4x4 TRD cost any more than the genesis coupe did? They've been stalling on calling the insurance company so figure I'd just ask here. Btw - the tacoma in question would be anywhere from 01-04 double cab.

Go online to some insurance co and get some quotes. You will get some idea what the difference is between vehicles. You could get a job and pay the difference....

i don't know how well i can help as being from Canada i pay for 2 vehicles on my insurance i have a 2013 toyota corolla S full coverage and a 2001 SR5 4x4 4 cyl Tacoma i pay 116 dollars a month I'm trading my 2001 for a 2007 V6 4X4 TRD Sport Double Cab Long Bed they quoted me 93 dollars a month for it and added with the car brings my total to 117 a month

I would go for the 4X4 over the 4X2 its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it

There are so many variables that go into calculating insurance quotes that we couldn't possibly tell you whether or not it's going to be more or less expensive than your previous car insurance.

4x4 is almost always a little more to insure than 4x2 (again there are variables at play here so there's no certainty).

In my experience, if you're interested in getting into off-roading then it would be unwise to settle for a 2wd IMO. "I only want to do the easy stuff" will quickly turn into "I wish I had gotten a 4x4" or "how much/how hard is a 4wd conversion?" after you start offroading some and get bit by the bug. If you can swing the 4x4 I'd get the 4x4.

Although if you're young, in school and your parents are still footing some or all of your bills then a ridiculously expensive hobby like offroading should be at the bottom of your list of priorities, lol. Trust me it ain't cheap.

I went from a 2012 Jetta to a 2013 Prerunner and my insurance only increased $0.86 per month. Over a year later, I get a letter saying that due to the type of vehicle I drive, there is a premium increase. So my insurance is going up $25 a month just because I drive a Tacoma. I haven't had an accident in 12 years.... when I was 16. I blame all these third gen drivers catching mad air or driving into buses or walls.

Insurance depends on your age, your record, the vehicle, 2wd vs 4wd, your region, etc. Your premium will definitely vary.

Kinda hit the nail on the head at the end there. I'm in my last year of college, make ~10/hr right now (will increase drastically once I graduate), but yeah I'll be paying for the truck and my parents the insurance.

But yes I can tell this is an incredibly expensive hobby lol. This all started when my girl and I went camping last spring break at Devils River in del rio TX. It was kinda spur of the moment and we did little research beforehand. I took my little genesis coupe at there, and honestly, I cannot believe it lasted the weekend. It's all rock, some steep hills, a bunch of shit. I was getting so many worried looks and thumbs up from people there. The ranger said he's never seen a car small as mine out there lol. But it all opened my eyes to the limitations I face with a car small as that. So here I am. But tbh, with that said, I don't think I'll be modding much at all. Some tires, wheels, and a lift is all I'm considering for now.

Should have included - I'm 22 and in Texas. But anyway I'll check out some websites to get a quote. For some reason I thought the answer would be simple when just comparing between the hyundai genesis and a tacoma. Thanks for the help though
