There is a piece of small rubber trim behind the factory fender flares

I can't find a diagram that shows it or a part number

Is this something you can buy separate and if not is there something to substitute?

Just a thin piece of rubber that makes a transition from the body to the flare and probably isolates plastic flare from metal fender

I probably just don't know proper terminology

Grab your vin, and head to parts.toyota.com. Select your vehicle via vin. Those rubber pieces are in the Body & Interior > Moulding category.

I just replaced one of mine last month.

2001 Double Cab (YMMV - which is why I suggest using your own vin):
    Front-RH: 53851-35061
    Front-LH: 53851-35061

    Rear-RH: 61783-35071
    Rear-LH: 61783-35091

They have a little strip of double-sided tape on them where they meet the fender flare. You'll have to make sure to clean the previous residue from the flare and clean with a rubbing alcohol or something similar before applying the new strips.

They were the correct length, I didn't have to trim them. I applied with an even natural tension. If you use any tension, it's likely they'll come unstuck.

If you're taking the fender flare off, you're going to need new clips too. The clips are kinda a pain to remove from the truck.

I have no plans to take fender off, if it is something that cannot be fixed by just removing flare it can stay as is for now.

Noticed the other a day a piece about 6" long was hanging off like a string

Ordering parts for front end and thought I would throw this on order while I was spending money :D

Just plugged that first number in, I have looked at the parts diagrams several times and that number brought one up I had not seen

Thank you, I think that you identified the part I was trying to find

I think he meant fender flare, not just fender. I don't see why the fender would need to come off. The clips to the fender flares are a pain though, I would get a door panel clip remover tool(s) for it. If you try using anything else it'll mangle the paint most likely (though it does get covered by the flares)

Also buy some more clips because they tend to break when removed

I did indeed mean the fender flare, and I've edited my post :)

I got an interior trim kit off Amazon, that has lots of great spudgers and soft pry tools, which were perfect for getting the flare off. But yeah, the clips stay stuck to the truck and getting them outta there SUCKED. Some you can reach from the inner fender and compress the clip to free them, but the ones behind the plastic wheel well shield took a bit more effort with some needle nose to either twist or break them.
