I have the 4.0L V6. I’m not sure what’s going on with my fan clutch. There appears to be no difference in resistance between a dead cold and a hot engine. I can spin the fan by hand very easily but if I try to give it spin it will not freewheel (think like a bike tire in the air) but will stop after less than a quarter turn. Is it going bad?

Looking online I see 2 part numbers for similarly priced fan clutches that fit my truck:

    16210-0P010; and
    16210-31020

    What is the difference??

    Are you overheating?

But I have sluggish AC and just because not overheating doesn’t mean it’s not bad. It’s cold here in Washington also.

Do you get the characteristic "fan roar" on cold start-up that dies down within a number of seconds after start?

If the roar goes away after a few seconds of start up then I would not worry about it @hx989

Everything sounds okay at the moment. The hard to turn blades are only one way of inspecting things but are not an ultimate tell all of the fan clutch operation and condition.

Thanks, do you know what’s up with the two different part numbers?

If I was to take a wild guess one is for 2TR and the other is for 1GR.

I'd say everything is good with the fan. Make sure it has no play and it's not leaking any oil.
Can't help with the two different part numbers.

No part number on your fan assembly?

    OME and worth every penny.
I've seen guys grab them. Nice party trick but I just couldn't do it.

Mine roars all the time. It's been changed and worked better a while then did it again. Oh well, better than freewheelin'.

Not gonna lie that looks like a shit idea. Especially in the Taco engine bay where room is limited. If you jumped your hand is either going into the belt, or further into the fan

Thanks! That’s probably the one I would get because Aisin supplies Toyota and I don’t care to pay triple for the red and white box. My truck has the tow package and came with the pink clutch shaft. However, it’s got 200k miles on it and as I understand it they don’t fail abruptly but gradually. Also, to be 100% fair I don’t know if I’m on what verge of overheating due to the huge flat spot in the dummy gauge on the dash.

When I enter my VIN it still tells me both part numbers fit...

Did you just change the oil levels to get it to engage more? Didn’t know these things can be adjusted aside from that.

Change oil viscosities i believe. Heavier oil will engage it more and move more air, but it will also eat up HP and hurt performance if it's too heavy
