The 275/70R17 I can't get until March where I live, the 285/70R17 are available now and are cheaper due to being SL (Standard Load) whereas the 275s are LT (C Load) so they cost more. The 285/70R17 6 ply are sold out as well, should I wait or just get the SL now?

If I get the 285s I will save some $ and also have a lighter tire, 50lb vs 57lb on the 275s. Running Bilstein 6112 on 5/6 notch + Icon Billet UCA and 5160s in the rear with Icon RXT leafs (Option #1).

Will I have to do CMC with the 285s on a 2" lift or will heat gun molding/trimming be enough? I'm hoping the alignment shop can play with the caster a bit on the UCAs to remedy the rubbing. Wheels are -10 offset.

Just trying to get some ideas of which tire would be the best for my needs, never had any experience with SL tires but I've been told they are all I need on a light pickup truck. I don't carry much weight (200lb max) but I do go off road, no rock crawling.

So I ended up with 275/70/17 as I couldn't decide between 265 or 285. With a -10 offset (SCS wheels) I was rubbing a lot and had to trim a bit of plastic. Specifically, I had to heat the front liner a bit and push it in and trim the front bumper bottom edge. Along with having to trim the plastic by the cab mount. I might do a CMC here relatively soon just for peace of mind as it's pretty close. I can't speak to the C vs SL rating as I'm not educated enough in that area.

For me personally, I kind of wish I went with 285s. Was planning to avoid all this cutting and trimming but since i'm likely doing it anyways, might as well have gone for the 285's and saved some weight. Your experience might be different.

I see, so you have the same -10 offset as I do and still rub with 275/70R17. How much lift do you have and are your wheels 8.5” width?

After reading your post I’m leaning towards the 285s because if I already have to modify with 275s I might as well just go with the 285s and cut/trim a little more.

Interesting, did you have to trim or cut/chop at all? Does it rub when you off road? I don’t think I will rub on the road, it’s when I go off road that I’m not sure about which will be a weekly occurrence.

EDIT: What offset are your wheels?

Highly unlikely you'll get away with a 285 on a -10 offset wheel without doing a CMC

I have another set of wheels that are 0 offset, would that make any difference? I've read on TW that some are getting away with no CMC on the 4Runner TRD Pro wheels which I believe are +4mm offset.

Big difference. Really depends on what you do though. Personally, I think anything above 265 would benefit from a CMC if you are off roading. I plan on doing one with 285's and a 3" lift, even though I am not rubbing. Main reason is I know eventually I'm going to 35's. I'll adjust the rest accordingly when that time comes.

But yea, 2" lifts with negative offset you are for sure gonna rub more than plastic probably even with 265's (I could be wrong here though cuz I think that's stock tire size for Toyota style lifts like the PRO has). Look at it this way, do it now and you can always go up a tire size if you want.

Coil spacer lifts limit up-travel, which is why you don’t rub. With a “proper” full travel lift, your wheel will stuff much higher , so you get rubbing when the wheel stuffs when turned. It’s one of the advantages of spacer lifts that it prevents rubbing.

Just as a minuscule data point: I'm on a Dobinsons setup which is probably like 2" front and rear and am currently running 265/70r17s on 17x9 with -12 offset wheels and have zero rubbing at this point. Caveat being that I don't do any offroading so it's entirely possible there'd be rubbing at more suspension dynamic extremes.
