Hey guys, I wanna swap out the dinky 245/75/16 tires my new SR5 came with to the standard 265/70/16 the other trims get.

I’m torn between the Toyo AT III or the Falken wild peak AT3W. Both would be a P rated tire and I’m looking at about $1,000 even for the toyos and $1,100 for the falkens through Point S.

I live in Oregon and want something that’s good in the wet weather. Road noise is a factor for me so I’d like to hear how that’s been for you guys if you’ve had either of these.

a 3rd option for me would be the Open range AT tires Les Schwab puts out. I had them on a previous truck and they did well but I didn’t really push their capabilities at the time and sold the truck shortly after I bought them. Also about $1k.

    let me know your thoughts!

Can't comment on the Toyo's but l have Wildpeaks on my truck and they have been a great upgrade over the Factory Goodyear's

Honestly both are good choices, I like Toyo for long term, but both will handle the various weather that oregon can throw at you.

Only issue is Toyo's can be hit or miss with inventory and I always encourage buying a readily available tire incase of a blow out.

I have the toyo at3’s. I like them. However I can only compare them to the kO2’s. I’ve seen a lot of threads about wild peaks having issues with balancing.

For me, it comes down to country of origin. Support American manufacturing or not.
Your choice here is made in the USA or made in Thailand/China.

I was on the same boat. Ordered the Toyos because they seem to be the better brand over Falken. Plus I wanted TOYO on my TOYOta. Price was about the same, Falken would have saved me maybe $75.

Actually both the falcons and the Toyos have manufactures in Japan. If manufacture origin is a factor. Our trucks are engineered in Japan by a Japanese cooperation as well.

Your Tacoma was made in Japan by Japanese workers? Cool.
I said country of origin, not where the home office may be.
Again, support American workers, or not. Your choice.

I'm sure the Tacoma and Tundra was designed and built in the USA?

Toyo AT3's are USA & Japan
Falken AT3W's are Thailand & USA, recently less USA more China now from what I hear

Yes, some Toyos are made in Japan, they have a different looking sidewall lugs.

Tacoma’s were designed in North America for North America only. They are not offered anywhere else.

The Japanese made Toyo’s have a shallower sidewall. If you go with Toyo AT3’s, get the ones made in America, which have deeper grooves and look more aggressive. This has been documented on this board if you go digging. It’s a drastic difference in aesthetic. I wanted Toyo’s too but when I saw them IRL they were made in Japan and the sidewall looked weak. I ended up going with General Grabber ATX.

A lot of the reviews online and YouTube on both of these tires are on full size trucks like Ford F-150, Ram etc. I like getting feedback from the TW community and hearing how these tires performed ON TACOMAS. A lot of reviewers nowadays seem to give overly glowing reviews of products in hopes of sponsorship for creating content.

I said engineered. Since we are nit picking words. Which it was. It’s 65% made in the US. Get outta here fool. I have my dd214 and I support US business. I’m just saying.

I’ve seen them in Dubai, but beside the point. I said engineered. The outside of the first Tacoma was engineered by some dude in Cali but the truck was overall based on the hilux mechanically speaking. I’m not talking about manufacturing. My pro was made in Texas. I get it.

Maybe in E load but these are us made ones in SL and they don’t have shit for side wall. I’ll double check manufacturing but I’m 95% sure.

The old Toyota Trucks were based on the Hilux, if I am not mistaken the Tacoma is not, however the 4th Generation is supposed to share a global platform.

Yeah. That’s what the ones I almost bought (SL) looked like. Discount Tire told me they were made in Japan and let me swap them for Grabbers. Perhaps you are right and the deeper grooves are on E Load? There was another thread on this board that speculated it might be a difference between Japanese and American made. The only empirical evidence I have is I ordered some SL 265 70r17’s SL load Toyo’s and they had a shallow sidewall so I swapped them. I didn’t compare them to E Load, though. I didn’t want that heavy a tire.

IIRC, the Falkens were significantly heavier than the Toyo’s so I went to Grabbers to salvage some fuel economy because the Grabbers were lighter.

Do you realize that both sizes are identical in the height? Only difference is 20 mm of width.
If I were you, I would go 255/85/16, 265/75/16 or save money and upgrade your wheels to 17". More selection.
