I purchased a case of “oem” oil filters from Amazon. I saw several videos highlighting the differences between real and fake oem filters and the ones I received look just like the fake ones do in every video. Linked below is the ad on Amazon I ordered from, the other link showcases the differences. Just sharing in hopes of saving someone the hassle.

This is why you don’t buy OEM parts on Amazon. TONS of fake shit on there.

Damn even fake oil filters now. I know sensors and injectors are a big problem with fakes. Gotta be careful where you buy OEM parts. Stuff like that I prefer to buy in person even if it costs a little more, or from a dealer online.

Wal Mart sells Toyota oil filters, started carrying them in-store awhile back. I usually get mine there for pretty cheap.

I watched that video, but I'm not understanding how we can confirm the fake one is in fact fake.... Looks like it could just be a different production run?

Is it different when you slice it open?

I just received a case of oil filters from Brunswick Auto wholesale parts (BAM- ordered from Amazon). I did a bit of research on them and didn’t find any mention of them selling counterfeit parts. The last case I ordered from Amazon was fulfilled by a Toyota dealer, but they weren’t listed as an option anymore. I will have to take a look at them tomorrow and see if they look dubious. You can always return them.

1776 Taco, What makes you believe that the filters you received from BAM are counterfeit? I just went out to my garage/barn and compared the box and filter to one from a local dealer. The ones I just received are identical to the genuine filter. Even the holograms on the boxes look exactly the same.
I know a good bit of fake junk is sold on Amazon, but these filters from BAM in Brunswick Ohio look legit.

That said a lot of fake junk is certainly sold Amazon.

Before I went and thought about returning them I did a little more research. BAM wholesale parts is located right down the street from Brunswick Toyota in Brunswick Ohio. The box my filters are in was, according to the shipping label, sent from Toyota on Creek rd in Cincinnati Ohio. This appears to be a Toyota distribution center. They were shipped to Brunswick Toyota.
I believe than BAM is an online parts sales arm of the auto group that owns the Toyota dealership as well as Dodge Ram and Subaru dealerships.

It's an issue with all kinds of auto parts, not just oil filters. If you do buy from Amazon or wherever, just buy it from a Toyota dealer.

I don’t necessarily think they’re counterfeit, I’m not well versed in the subject to say yes or no. I’m just simply saying the ones I received appear just like the ones in the videos I’ve watched.

I watched the video. hard to say they are fake without tearing them open. most likely either a new VS old one or just a different manufacturing plant.

Since I just received a case of D1 filters from BAM through Amazon (shipped from BAM) I decided to clear this up once and for all. I called the Brunswick Auto Mart and talked to them. They are a dealership group who have Toyota, Subaru and Volkswagen dealerships and several others. They are a Toyota dealer and ship Toyota OEM parts. They are the Amazon vendor shown. Items are shipped directly from them and not Amazon.
If they are counterfeit then it is just as likely any other dealer has counterfeit parts in stock too.

You could make a definitive answer.

Need a "clone" (ie fake) filter and a known OEM Toyota filter. Cut them open and dissect them. Compare the individual parts.

Keep in mind. Toyota filters could easily be made at different facilities. This could account for the differences you see between the filters.

I would suspect Toyota has a specification for the size, pressure, label, package and filtration level for the filter. They likely don't specify HOW the filter is manufactured.

1776, Did your filters come in a box that included this label on the outside?
I am about as certain as you can be that these are OEM filters since they were from an authorized dealership.

Are they actually fake, or a manufacture that toyota uses? There are many manfacture's in china, malaysia and thialand that make components for well known manufactures in japan.

I’ve done everything but get in my truck and take them back to Brunswick Toyota to assure they are genuine if ordered from BAM through Amazon.
Unless an authorized Toyota dealer is pushing fake parts knowingly, they are OEM.

Probably a good idea to verify a product is actually counterfeit before strongly implying it is, including mention of the seller.
