Went yesterday to get my truck inspected and it failed due to the emissions system not being ready. They asked me if I cleared any codes or got a new battery but I haven’t done either. So I I’ve been confused on why this would happen. I have the n2 designs remote start and a rough country speedometer calibrator which I suspect could be the issue but its just confusing on what would be resetting or keeping my truck from completing a cycle. I removed both and will have to drive around to complete the cycle

I installed them over the winter so I didnt have them last time I went for an inspection. I took the battery off about 2 months ago but I think it would be good by now. Battery voltage is still good

I kind of learned to get the test done with a hot engine by letting it idle the whole time you’re waiting for the test, no matter how f’n long it takes to get it into the shop. I hate this shit. Good luck!

Saving the environment by having to drive 60 miles. Edit: I think if you start it and shut it off… like 25x that resets something. It’s all B.S.

You can run every monitor on a Toyota (except evap) in a ten to fifteen minute drive.

I've already been through emissions last summer with my tacoma. These trucks are so clean, I can't fathom how one would fail. It was like spending a $20 bill on a new truck, and getting nothing in return.:frusty:

Years ago, when I lived in CT, you could pass a vehicle that was truly unsafe as long as the emissions were OK. It was ridiculous.

Now in NH, there are no emissions testing but everything must work on the vehicle. I remember getting failed on my old beater Jeep because one of my cheap add-on fog lights was out.

I remember talking to the tech saying the lights were just aftermarket and his response being “if the are on the car, they must work”. I just unbolted them and retested (passed). Crazy

In 7 years of owner ship AND 109000 MILES in Mass, my 2016 off road failed emissions twice .About a 6-mile drive to dealer first thing in the AM with a startup and a 6 mile drive. The times it failed they said same Thing the computer not ready. took for a 20-mile ride and came right back and it passed. the two years of owner ship 2nd and 7th it failed. The years it passed did nothing different. The month was Jan. so it was cold. when I ask the dealer why they had no answer. O WHAT A FEELING!!!13082622_993261327406308_8463582324423856890_n.jpg

It's still the same in CT; emissions only. Four bald tires, no windshield? No problems as long as the emissions are in tact.
My state is pretty tough. I was a licensed inspector for many years and we constantly are being audited for things like window tint and plate frames.
    No tint.
    No plate frames/covers.
No tires more than 1/2" past the flares.
    No lift over 4".
No exhaust mods, technically the way the law is written a chrome tip even fails.
They send out covert vehicles to "test" the inspectors. I failed a car because of a MIL, it had a large leak evap code. They came down the next day for me to sign a written warning because I didn't inspect the gas cap seal (which they had removed and caused the MIL). I refused to sign it because I said it was nonsense, the car had failed for a large leak.....period. They suspended my license for 6 months because I refused to sign it. I put up a major stink about it and actually went down to the state garage, relinquished my license and told them where they could stick it. They gave the license back, but I refused to do the five year recertification required by the state. The head of emissions and safety actually came down with two "goons" and tried to shame me into taking the test, I basicly told them to pound sand.
Needless to say I'm "well known" down there at the safety and emissions office.

Yeah here in ct, it's crazy with this emission program they have. It's all about money....just another tax. I use to take our companies gm fleet van I was driving to emission testing, and it would fail. I'd go over to the auto parts store, buy a bottle of Christy's dry gas, put in the tank, and top off at the nearest gas station. I'd return to the emission testing ctr for a retest. I'd laugh my ass off every time when they passed it, telling me how sweet this truck was running.

Heck, I use to take my v8 2001 tundra though emissions with the ecl on because the o2 sensors had rotted off the catalytic converters at 250k miles. It would pass no problem. The lady that use drive my truck into the testing bay never noticed the black piece of electrical tape stuck on the dash I had over the ecl light.

When I lived in VT the way they checked your emissions was to make sure there was no check engine light. If there was no light you passed emissions. They did check other stuff including all the lights and put the vehicle on a lift to check that your suspension was safe. Now I'm in Florida where there is no state inspection and you can basically drive any piece of shit you want.

Lots of states ended their emission inspection. WA ended it in 2020

How long ago? Most state switched to OBD diagnostic methods to do emission testing 20 some years ago

I don't even remember needing one from 2010 - 2015 while I was out there. Did they add emissions testing briefly after that or was it a regional thing similar to how Georgia doesn't require it but I believe the Atlanta area does?

I had to do one in 2011-2012 on 1998. I was expecting to do on Tacoma when turned 5 years but it was not required. Had to Google it to find out. Hybrid were exempted

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
    @Saltlife027

I passed emissions all day plugged into the computer in NC. I get to Saratoga County and I fail. The dumbass can’t tell me why I fail because he doesn’t know how to read the computer. I am going to a different place but hopefully this helps you below. You can only have one NOT READY code to pass. All others must be complete and READY.

Begin by: (Make sure you have between 1/4 and 3/4 fuel in the gas tank. The EVAP test will not run while your truck has a full tank of gas or the gas tank is near empty). Ensure there are no pending or active trouble codes and that the check engine light is not on.

Also note, the secondary air injection monitor only runs after a cold soak procedure... best done by leaving your Tacoma parked overnight. Getting the air injection monitor to run after the engine has warmed up is not possible. If you've been trying to get the monitor ready after having already warmed up the truck you'll need to wait until the difference between IAT (Intake Air) and ECT (Coolant Temp) is less than 13F (7C). The cold soak procedure is as follow:

1a. Start the engine and allow ECT (Coolant Temp) to reach 176F (80C) or greater. (This can be done by letting the engine idle or by driving the vehicle.)

1b. Let the vehicle cold soak for 8 hours or until the difference between IAT (Intake Air) and ECT (Coolant Temp) is less than 13F (7C).

    Start the Drive Cycle Here

    • A. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 10 minutes or more.

      B. Drive the vehicle at 43-56 mph or more for 3 to 5 minutes. Be sure to maintain engine speed between 900 and 3,200 rpm.

      C. Stop the vehicle and allow the engine to idle for 3 to 5 minutes.

      D. Repeat steps B and C once.

      E. Drive the vehicle at 40 mph to 55 mph for 3 minutes.

      F. Drive the vehicle 35 mph to 45 mph for 7 minutes.

      G. Stop the vehicle and turn off the engine. Release the pressure in the fuel tank by removing and then reinstalling the fuel tank cap.

      H. Start the engine and as soon as safely possible begin driving at approximately 45 mph for 5 minutes.

      I. Drive the vehicle at approximately 25 mph for 15 minutes, and include a minimum of two stops for approximately 30 seconds each.

      J. Stop the vehicle and allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes.

      K. Drive the vehicle at 25 mph or more for at least 50 seconds. Make sure your engine speed is above 900 rpm.

      L. Stop the vehicle and allow the engine to idle for 40 seconds or more.

      M. Perform steps “K” and “L” ten times.
If readiness status of all monitors do not switch to “complete,” ensure preconditions are met, turn the ignition switch OFF, then repeat steps “A” through “M.” Completing the Toyota Tacoma drive cycle above should set the emission monitors required to pass the smog check.
