I have the 2021 trd pro.

I also have the 7 pin and 4 pin for towing from the factory.

I was looking at the redarc brake controller but someone mentioned that if I have the 7 pin from the factory I should already have the controller.

    Can anyone confirm this?

You do not have one, Tacomas only come with the it pre-wired to plug into an aftermarket brake controller.

Want to ask in a different way.

Without the after market controller if I stepped on the brake would it still apply brakes from the trailer?

Blue pin should read 12 v when brake pedal is applied.

The trailer has the actual actuator.

Hope that gives a little more information.

I went with the Tekonsha P3 brake controller and the 3040-P wiring adapter. Basically plug and play.

My Redarc Liberty arrives tomorrow! Had a Tekonsha in my second gen but no place to mount in my 3rd gen that keeps it out of the way. Lots of positive reviews, stays out of the way and looks factory

Good deal that is what I have.

If you would have towed with out the controller all that would have happened was lighting up the trailer brake lights. I would not actually apply the electric brakes on the trailer. That may be ok for a light trailer but not recommended if the trailer has electric brakes.

Being new to towing I didn't want to take that chance and stuck to the saying "I'd rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it".

I tow a pop up camper that is under 3000 pounds. I guess technically I don't need electric brakes to meet federal DOT but the trailer has electric brakes so I use them. Better to be safe. Having the control in your truck will be good. You won't need to worry about it if you borrow or rent anything you can pull.

We don't have the space to buy and definitely planned on renting 1 or 2 times a year. so with this i also got the Curt 45900 adjustable receiver with dual ball setup just to account for the different possibilities out there.
