Got a letter from Toyota today about there being a concern about rust issues with the 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacomas. In regards to 3rd Gen 2016 amd 2017 are impacted. Its not a recall, but rather a notice that if you have issues you are covered for 12 years from the truck's first day of service.

I imagine others received the letter? If not keep an eye out for it.

Even my wife who doesnt pay attention to car stuff said, wow your truck has had nothing but problems. Yep it's not the old Toyota we were once used to.

    Mine has had zero problem.

I received it a while back. That notice applies more to people in the north than anywhere. You’re not going to have the rust issues in the south like you will in areas that get a lot of snow.

Old Toyotas rust. This letter is posted numerous times on this forum.

Be glad Toyota is standing by the product, 12 years from now is a long time.

Just got mine back from the dealership the other day. If you crawl under your truck you’ll notice the box frame section under the cab. They fill that “solid” with Toyota magic filler. Cap and seal the open section with a plastic piece. Also along all the frame seams where they are layered they throw some more waxing stuff on. Dealership had it for 24 hours and told not to get it wet or drive in puddles for another 12. Problem solved.

Run your VIN on toyota.com and check it that way.

What state are you in, and did you buy new or used?

If you live in salt country and you're not properly attentive to the frame on any marquee, you are just asking for trouble.

12 yrs of service is a pretty long time for a manuf to cover something........

But one is much better off to take care of what they have than to go thru the headache of a frame swap.

Can confirm, though at least the swap was pretty smooth in my personal experience.

I am in New Hampshire and bought used. I'll run the VIN and see what I get.
    OK
Ran the VIN and got this

There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle.

So, my frame won't rust? :notsure:

Here's hoping, but I'm not as up on the 3G. I'll send you something else.

Not in my personal experience. I live in Minnesota, have owned 7+ automobiles, never bought into the rust proofing sales pitch, and never had an automobile fail because of rust. I’ve had some rusty bodies, but all were built before the 1990’s.

I have however seen some frames with serious rust damage. For example, my buddy has late 80’s or maybe early 90’s jeep wrangler that has rust holes in the frame. It’s a project jeep.

The same buddy had a rusty 70’s Corrola(?) in the 80’s that almost broke in half going hard over some railroad tracks. He was pretty hard on this automobiles.

I rustproof all my vehicles, cheap insurance to “help “ combat rust. My mechanic really appreciates it when everything isn’t rusted shut. Also helps with resale value, to me it’s a no brainer.

Toyota does not fill the boxed section solid with magic filler. It's the same spray wax that is used on the seams. Only difference is there is a wand with multiple holes in the end that sprays the hot wax in a pattern to cover the entire inside of the boxed section.
