Experimented with a $90 air box mod

Got bored. Wanted to try something.

The general consensus is that CAI are kind of a waste on the Tacoma, the stock airbox is already really good at doing it's job. But I did get curious and just wanted to try something cheap and see if it would make any difference to the sound. So my answer was to remove the Helmholtz resonator. There are opinions on if it affects the power gain, but IMO if it does then it is negligible.

To do this, I decided to look into the K&N filter kit they sell that is designed to fit the stock airbox (Drop in filter + tube), and I called K&N to see if I could JUST get the tube. They said yes. The parts list you see below:

    HOSE CLAMP #52 (4) Part:08610
    HOSE; 3.25"ID X 2"L (1) Part: 08690
    VENT; STRT, 5/8 BARBED 1/4 (1) Part: 82638
INTAKE TUBE; (KN) (1) Part: 08170
    E HOSE; 3.25" ID X 2-5/8" L (1) Part: 33-5017
Altogether, it cost a bit under $90 to buy the parts including shipping. Can definitely save some $ if you have some of the connection parts around or shop around for parts other than the tube and vent. I just wanted to know K&Ns price.

Install was as easy as you would expect. I wouldn't say it sounds a lot louder, but it does give the Tacoma a more "throaty" sound. In the higher RPMs especially, it definitely growls more. For only $90, I wouldn't say it's the worst way to add some grunt to your Tacoma. And easy to reverse if you want to. I did also do a YouTube video about it, showing install and all that. And also a rev comparison.

Also did a YouTube video showing the install, and a rev comparison.

I usually prefer induction noise over exhaust notes, especially on inline 4's and V6's.

V4's, Yamaha cross plane I4's and flat 6's sound great from both ends.

Yeah it's basically what the HPS intake tube does. The HPS tube is one-piece silicone, doing away with the two couplers.

Also add the TRD PRO resonator, the piece that goes on the other side of the box to the fender. More air flow.

I wish I had seen this before I bought the TRD set up minus the k&n type filter. I prefer the
paper filter. I then lopped off the smaller box on the TRD tube. This would have been much easier
    and cheaper.

Looked into this for myself and above it appears the part number listed for the coupler ("HOSE") is actually the panel filter, and the INTAKE TUBE part number is for a long silicone hose from a Tundra kit.

    Here's what's in the 57-9039 kit:

    Description Qty. Part #
    A HOSE CLAMP #52 4 08610
    B HOSE; 3.25"ID X 2"L 1 08690
    C VENT; STRT, 5/8 BARBED 1/4 1 82638
    D INTAKE TUBE; (KN) 1 087310A
    E HOSE; 3.25" ID X 2-5/8" L 1 08171
    F FILTER 1 33-5017

The clamps (A) and barb (C) is in this kit it appears....it popped up when doing a little research, so I can't say 100%
    PARTS KIT; 57-9039 K579039

For those interested, here is the PDF showing what parts are in the full kit. https://kandn.com/instructions/57-9039_inst.pdf

Negligible on the DB meter, not sure why do this. Only thing I got out of the whole shibang is appears you sit awfully close the steering wheel. Might wanna move back so the airbag doesn’t blow a hole in your chest…IMG_1511.jpg

I fail to see how it is any different than the stock intake tube from either of those perspectives. But you Cali guys have it alot tougher on the emissions stuff I'll give ya that.

I just got everything from K&N for about $95 shipped. Got the TRD air flow accelerator during Black Friday for around $32. If it warms up around here I might even put the parts on my truck. I always ran an Airaid intake tube and deck plate mod on my 3rd gen 4Runners. Never seemed to hurt. I’ll report back once the install is complete.

Installed my TOOB and funnel tonight. Took a short drive. I’m not mad. I’ve certainly spent more on less.

Robtaco, what's the difference between this and the kit that K&N sells to fit the stock air box? Besides the filter obviously.

From a guy who runs stock, what is the point of this? Not being a PITA - an honest question. Just to change the sound? Or is there an actual performance difference?
